Major Scholarships at Colorado School of Mines?

My mistake! I thought you were talking about the Harvey Mudd scholarship because someone else had mentioned Mudd…

Still waiting to hear about any merit aid. Has anyone gotten anything lately?

I think the scholarship information for instate students comes out later than the one for outofstate.

Did any of you go to the “Discover Mines” program on Monday Feb. 15th? What are your thoughts if you went?

We are planning to go on Sat. the 20th…

It was a great day for me since I had a chance to talk to some department heads about the programs i intend to major in. I also got the see the typical type of students there. I dont know why they make us pay $10/person though(the food is not that great.) Most of the recruiting events like this are often free, and other colleges even give students free T-shirts, mugs, and stuffs like that.

Finally got letter and no merit aid for my s. Letter says you have to have a 3.75 unweighted and he has 3.5 uw. Letter also said had to have a min 29 ACT with the 3.75 GPA. My s had a 33, but guess that didn’t matter.

Wow…you have to have a 3.75 UW? That excludes a lot of kids. I would think there would be some kind of wiggle room…such as accepting a slightly lower SAT with a higher ACT. After all, a 33 ACT does more for their “freshman stats” than a 29 ACT does.

We just got home from a trip up to Golden to tour Mines.

Aside from the 25% female stat (!) son was very favorable toward Mines.

It appears from what I have read in this thread that $12k is the max OOS merit award. That leaves roughly $28K/yr to cover. Going to be tough to justify when my son could likely attend Texas A&M (a very good engineering school as well) for less than half that much out of pocket.

Son does have a 3.95UW and an 800 math score going for him…but considering the stats of some in this thread, it sure looks like $12k is the max!

Tim

Just pulled out DSs college app. files from last year - guess it’s time to throw some of this away!
Anyhow I did confirm that his CSM Merit award was $12K. Just for the record though, he did not have a 3.75 unweighted, heck, he didn’t even have that weighted. Did have a high ACT which may have made the difference. Just saying, don’t let the 3.75 rumor dissuade you from applying. Also, just FYI, while he was accepted 10/10/09 did not receive his Merit Award letter until 1/06/10. Forgot to mention we are OOS.

I called CSM yesterday. They confirmed that $12k was the max merit aid this last go 'round. It can vary somewhat from year to year.

The admissions counselor we talked with Monday at CSM said the 3.75 UW gpa was the floor for merit. Evidently they can waive it.

Your son needs to keep looking. Since he can go to A&M for half the cost (and with more females!), there are other schools that would also be attractive to him and with better scholarships.

With his stats, he could get scholarships that would bring your costs down to well under $20k per year.

Is he going to major in engineering? What is his Math + CR score?

Is your son a likely NMF? What was his PSAT score?

Son just got “Golden App” and said “No essay, no application fee? Sure I’ll put it in” All your info is great. For those that are there now is it everything your child thought it would be? We have never visited and will have to justify the cost of a visit since son is mostly looking East coast.

Thanks!

I live in CO and know several kids who have gone there and they love it. Mines has a great set of videos on the website that helps one get the feel of the campus. Each year there are about 4-5 kids from our town’s high school who attend there.

Since you mentioned you are looking out east, my D is going to college of engineering at Cornell and loves it. One of the Cornell Chem E professors there was talking to my husband who is a Clarkson grad (way upstate NY) and said that his best graduate students have come from Clarkson–he is very impressed with the job they are doing in the undergrad area.
So, that may be another school to consider.

Being from Michigan, is your son looking a Michigan? That too has a great engineering rep.

Colorado is beautiful! Very young and physically active population in general. We have over 300 sunny days a year. Many of those sunny days are in the winter–it may be cool but it is sunny. It is also extremely dry as in super low humidiity which may take some adjusting to in the winter. Snow comes and then the sun melts it in a few days in most cases so students are not trudging through snow for weeks at a time.

And its close to so many great outdoor recreational opportunities. Colorado has Coors, but we also have a Budweiser plant in Ft. Collins and some excellent microbreweries. Fat Tire is made here! I think Colorodo brews more beer now than any other state due to the 2 larger breweries and all of the great microbreweries.

Its a great place to live! I think the only bad thing about mines is the shortage of girls but as other posters stated, there are lots of co-eds at UDenver and CU Boulder and of course up at the ski areas!

TKsmom: thanks for the info - his top two choices right now are MIT and Cornell. He wants Environmental Engineering/Science so he is also looking at SUNY ESF, U of Illinois Urbana Champagne, and Stanford. He is applying to Michigan but we live 3 miles from U of M so he wants to get out of the area. Clarkson is not even on our radar so I will have to check it out.
He fell in love with MIT and I am an alum but the cost?! I was ROTC and he is not so interested. We make too much $ to qualify for a lot of financial and his older sister is in school in Philadelphia so…

MIT offers (or used to anyway) no (or low) interest 10 year loans to alumni whose children attend MIT.

I know this because very close friends used the loans to finance their D’s undergrad at MIT. They’ll be making their last loan payment this fall. Dad got his PhD at MIT, but did his undergrad at Mines. (Dad is now a prof at Mines and high level manager at NREL–which is also in Golden.)

WayOutWestMom: are you talking about a PLUS loan? I haven’t seen anything about special loans for MIT alumni parents but would definitely be interested. I have been talking to son of perhaps going to undergrad at less expensive school and then doing grad work at MIT. I just hate to have to say no if he gets in but the loans are going to be huge!

It wasn’t a Parent Plus loan.

As they explained it to me, it was a special alumni-only perk made available through the university itself. Or maybe the alumni relations office. I’m not sure if MIT brokered the loan or if the university itself provided the funding. I do remember the dad bragging about his no interest alumni loan.

But remember that the D graduated almost 10 years ago now—so it is possible that things have changed.

IIRC, the alumni loan program was something that MIT didn’t advertise or even mention and how the dad ever found out it, no one ever figured out. But the dad was always coming up with one interesting bargain or another.

And the loans were huge! It was like paying an additional mortgage payment every month for 10 years. No wonder they’re planning a “burning of the loan note” party this fall.

I’m going to go a little off topic… but the floor for merit aid (for this year’s freshmen) is a 3.8 uw GPA and a 29 ACT. It’s not a 3.75 anymore.

How long does it take for them to mail over the decision? I’m getting real antsy.

Wait, can anybody receive merit aid in late January or early February? All my materials got in a bit late… late November (after the priority Golden Scholars App).

I have not even received a letter from them on whether or not I was accepted. I am freaking out

Have you checked to make sure they have all your materials? There was some mixup with transcripts during the fall. Even though my son’s school sent in the transcript, we found out about a month later that they never got it, and had to have it sent again.
