major switching

I have a question. Lets say that all my electives in my high school are business oriented because my high school is a business school program. However, I want to go into pre-med eventually. Would it be beneficial for me to apply to colleges as a business major and freshman year of college switch this major to bio/chem? I feel as I would be more competitive applying as a business major because it seems as if I am passionate for it due to all my business oriented course work and ECs.

thanks

It doesn’t matter. Pre-med is not a major. It’s taking a bunch of prerequisites. You can major in any subject. You don’t need to go to bio/chem at all.

Since the vast majority of colleges, with the exceptions being NYU, uPenn (Wharton) and the likes, do not require you to declare a major until the end of your sophomore year AND don’t separate students based on intended majors, there’s nothing wrong with framing yourself as a business major and then changing your mind once you’re accepted. Tons of students do that.

While I do not understand your reasons, you can do whatever you wish. Stay the same major, switch majors, have any combo of major(s) / minor(s), it is all pretty irrelevant to medical school application cycle. Do not do anything like this for the sake of medical school. Choose any combo of major(s) / minor(s) your heart desires and attend ANY college YOUR heart desires and you do not need to be competitive at all, except for one type of programs - combined bs/md (or ba/md, which is practically the same as bs/md). However, you will have to maintain close to 4.0 in college, this one is pretty much a must with min. being somewhere around 3.6.

From a med school standpoint, this is completely irrelevant.

From a college standpoint, I would think that since your high school pigeon holed you into business that you wouldn’t be any more or less competitive for any major. Sure you have a lot of business stuff but that’s to be expected at a business oriented high school. While you don’t have a lot of non business stuff, that’s to be expected at a business oriented high school.
