Major trouble

I have a friend who wants to major in marine biology but he’s a colorado resident and there’s no programs like that there. He wants to go to Lsu for the major but he’s wondering since the major doesn’t exist in his state does he get a discount on tuition?

Hello?

Nope. He still pays the full out-of-state rate (unless he qualifies for scholarships or other merit aid).

He should check out the Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE). Many public universities in western states do offer discounts on their normal out-of-state tuitions to residents of other western states, including Colorado. However, the schools that participate in this program are often smaller and less well known. According to the WUE website, the following schools participate in WUE and offer marine biology:

University of Alaska Southeast, Juneau Campus
California State University, Stanislaus
University of Hawaii at Manoa
University of Nevada, Las Vegas
Western Washington University

Seven of the California State University campuses jointly operate a marine lab in Moss Landing. Four of the participating schools – CSU East Bay, CSU Channel Islands, Sacramento State, and Stanislaus State – are also WUE schools. They may all offer bio majors the opportunity to study marine biology at Moss Landing, even if they don’t have an explicit “Marine Biology” degree or concentration.
