Major?

Okay, so I'm an incoming junior and I am heavily involved in theatre, not so much community theatre. I have acted my freshmen year in (The Crucible, the Hysterical History of the Trojan War, and Bye Bye Birdie) and last year (How to Succed in High School Without Really Trying, and South Pacific). And this year I did make up for Fools our school play. I was considering to save my plays for tech stuff. Oh, also I am apart of my schools Show Choir, band, and speech and debate team. But, lately I'm wondering if I should go into college for acting. I am considering doing tech. But, is there a way to double major in tech and acting. Would that be a wise thing to do? Or should I do a back up degree in something else? I am really considering just to try out for out play this year "inherit the wind". I just need guidance from people who have experience.

None of the BFA programs we looked at supported a double major in acting and tech, although you may be able to find one that does. Acting and tech are really two different worlds, and neither has much time left over. But it doesn’t sound like you want to do both. It seems more like you just haven’t made up your mind yet. Maybe you should look at BA programs. That would give you more time to explore.

CCPA roosevelt doesn’t have a dedicated tech program, but all acting and mt students take required courses in tech and have a 30 hour per term tech requirement. My son has basically learned set construction while there and is now on an on-call list for local theaters looking for carpenters. It’s not a double major but you can learn both.

Was your son an acting or musical theatre major? And how is the audition process for that school?

He’s an acting major. I think the audition is fairly similar to other schools-two contrasting monologues for acting majors. Not sure about mt. They’re at Unifieds in New York and LA, and have an on campus audition in Chicago during Chicago unife

Here’s the audition info http://www.roosevelt.edu/Admission/CCPA/~/link.aspx?_id=D09FC13C74C44D0EB4CACE91DAE4E988&_z=z

Thanks everyone

pitt requires a lot of tech classes for their acting degree so that could be something to look at. and if you decide to major in acting in college, i and i;d say many on here are all for that. My personal take is college can be the 4 years of ur life when you really devote yourself to something you really love, acting. Go for it! the so called practical stuff( and having some stage tech experience is certainly practical) can come later. plus you learn a lot of things in an actor you can use in a number of other jobs.

At James Madison interested students can pursue both.

@AlwaysTheStage - Wayne State in Michigan has a very good tech program, acting program and dance program that Sonya Tayeh graduated from (since I saw in another thread you are interested in choreography). They don’t have a MT degree but there has been a lot of talk that this is going to happen in the next year. They do have a very good vocal department as well so you definitely could put together a lot of your interests-regardless of actually doing the MT degree. I do know two graduates from this past year - one in lighting design and the other in stage management that have had steady work since they graduated. One decided to stay local and the other is in NYC.

Evansville has a “theater generalist” major. And BU has the Theater Arts track, which allows freedom to study Design and Production along with acting. Emerson has an auditioned Acting BA, which allows you to take all the design/production courses as well as acting.
