Majoring in CS in the College of L&S?

On a global spectrum, I think it’s pretty well-known that Berkeley provides world class engineering programs for both undergrads and grads. I was admitted to the College of L&S for Computer Science (I didn’t apply engineering at the time because I wasn’t prepared to write an essay on an engineering-related topic). I was wondering if getting a BA for CS at Berkeley is just/almost as respected, or if it would be better to pursue CS at Northwestern’s McCormick School of Engineering/UCLA’s School of Engineering? Thanks!

BA (L&S CS) and BS (EECS) majors choose from the same CS courses (though the non-CS courses differ). Unless you are looking at the patent exam (where EECS’ ABET accreditation helps, although L&S CS majors can take additional science courses as specified for the patent exam), the difference in degree title does not mean that your CS education is lesser.

Some people have posted a preference for EECS, probably because their notion of school/major prestige is based on frosh-level admission selectivity (i.e. they implicitly care about your high school achievements, even if you are about to or have graduated from college). Sensible people won’t care about that when looking at Berkeley CS graduates – what you actually know and can do in CS is what matters.
