hey! i was admitted to cc for the class of 2014 :) :) :)
& while i love the courses on offer at cc i was really hoping to also do an engineering major for my undergrad as well
So i was wondering if its possible to do a double major with one major from cc and one major from seas???
I know about the combined plan (5 years program) which i was really interested in but is it also possible in 4 years???

Secondly, if i do plan to move into investment banking/private equity later on...would an economics BA from CC be less competitive as compared to a financial engineering degree from SEAS??? Ive heard that financial engineering at Columbia is extremely strong (but if I were able to do a major from SEAS i would still probably pick Computer Engineering...perhaps cuz i wouldve done economics from CC anyway)

Thanks!!

well econ has an econ-or dual degree, where you take eng courses.

i am sure you’ll be plenty competitive.

you could always transfer to SEAS if it makes you feel better. it is easier to go that route than from SEAS to CC (supply demand, etc.)

and you could do the combined plan technically in 4 years if you take a lot of f’ing courses, including your summers. for example - you’d basically need to finish your core and your BA major in the first two years, and third and fourth year do your prereqs and finish your major for engineering. talk about zero electives.

not worth it - you stand better chance to do better if you intern and network than what would amount to killing yourself to do the 5 year program in 4.

if you really like the idea of FE, transfer. but in my opinion ugrad coursework is marginal at best at situating you for jobs (concoll may disagree). i just know far too many folks that got to where they are by being personable and easier to deal with.

thanks alot adgeek

could you tell me a little more about the econ-or dual degree thing though?

as in i could do computer engineering and econ & get a dual degree in the 2??

well it would’ve been a single joint major, but looks like they’ve discontinued it for some reason starting this fall, who knows why, i’d ask the dept when you get to campus (the econ one that is). but i did know some folks who did it and liked it.
