My guardians really want me to do Management (follow the family tradition that kind of thing), but I really want to do Computer Science.
I read that GMU is strong in Economics and Business/Management, but also that quite a percentage (7%, I think?) of people have IT related majors too.
So I was wondering if GMU offers a strong curriculum in CS as well. Do you guys have lots of businesses coming in for the career fairs and stuff? My guardians say many GMU graduates end up in government-related organizations.
I really need to compromise with my guardians about my major at uni, so I'm guessing I could enroll as a Management major and do a minor or transfer to CS later.
Do you think that would be advisable? Or should I just try to find other schools that have strong Management and CS curriculums... :(

My son is a junior at Mason in Computer Science and is already receiving job offers and interview offers from top companies, some of whom he connected with at the career fair and others through his own initiative. He also has a highly paid internship with a great company. If you have an interest in IT/CompSci and aptitude for it then by all means GMU is a great place both for the academics and job/internship opportunities. Perhaps your guardians would be willing to discuss the options with an advisor at GMU? Frankly, although I’m not an expert, I would guess the job opportunities are better now for Compsci grads than Management grads. Companies need people with real tech skills, not just a degree. You could also consider Mason’s Software Engineering concentration under the Compsci Department which focuses more on the business and management sides of the field and would involve taking some business classes. Check out all the different degree options in both the IT and CompSci departments. Good luck!

I googled more about the GMU CS deparments, and found out that it does offer a stellar program, just as you said. I think I was a bit depressed at the fight I had about majors that I just read the CB school information and wrote at CC. I’ll be talking with my guardians again, along with your story and several other statistics. I hope I can get a better response out of them this time. Thank you so much!

Good luck, Stellathevillian!
