(Couldnt find a closer topic), but I’m a freshman at psu harrisburg. I was looking online to see entrance to major requirements, and i saw that university park’s entrance to Pre med major was super hard & complicated to get into, while other majors i also like have way less competitive entrance. So i have heard that virtually any major can be applied to med or pa school as long as you take the prerequisites, is this true? If so, i have been thinking about Majoring in Psych with a minor in bio, is this a good, applicable major? Thanks
Idk if alot of other schools do this, but for those that dont know in PSU you have to get into a major, for example to get into bio major you would need at least a C or better in intro to bio, calculus and chemistry. So thats how it works
As to med school any major is fine. Most premeds pick some bio major, partly out of interest, but also because you’ll satisfy graduation reqs and most premed reqs at same time, whereas if you’re say a Spanish lit major, one would have to find time to fit in year long science seqs (eg bio, chem, physics) into your schedule. In addition as say a Spanish lit major trying to fit in those premed reqs, you’d also need to find time for ECs and a college life where a bio major tends to make things little easier. Don’t get me wrong, many successful med school applicants choose many different pathways (eg humanities majors, double majors, etc). Consider picking a major where the material interests you as if you like material you’re more likely to do well GPA wise. Consider picking a major with a plan B in mind as most premed hopefuls will change their minds along the way. Consider picking a college where you can graduate with as little debt as possible as most med students will borrow their way through med school and it is expensive. Good luck
.“you would need at least a C or better in intro to bio, calculus and chemistry”
If getting a C and honestly, much better in these courses, will be a struggle for you, maybe medicine is not for you because you need not only a competitive GPA (ie 3.5, probably at least 3.6) to have a shot at med school, but med students are beyond swamped the first two years of med school with science courses.
Yea i was thinking of double majoring in psych and bio and maybe a minor in buisness when i transfer with pre reqs
