Does PSU have a pre-med track? I looked on their website, but I saw it listed as a major. Would it be possible/ would there be enough room in a schedule to major in accounting or health policy & administration, and to take the classes required for med school? Or would that require double-majoring in pre-med?
Since i'm not majoring in science (and thus not applying to the science school) would that require transferring?
I'm a little clueless as to how Penn state does this.

Like most schools, you can major in any subject and still go to med school. You just need to take the required “pre-req” classes (gen chem, ochem, etc) in order to be accepted.

Penn State has a PreMed major which is set up to cover all the prereqs and some other humanities related to medicine. You don’t have to major in PreMed in order to apply to med school from Penn State, it is simply there to serve as a basis for those who maybe are dead set on med school.

In general, you need 2 semesters each of
Gen. Chem
Organic Chem
Calculus
Biology
Physics

to meet the requirements for med school and do well on the MCAT. Penn State has a pretty intense pre-med program that goes well beyond those. They make you take bioethics, anat & phys, calculus based physics which usually only engineers and physics majors take, and physical chemistry. If you think you can handle it, biomedical engineering actually has the highest med school acceptance rate. To be honest, your idea of majoring in something else is smart, and it’s what most people I know are doing. As long as you take the required classes you should be good, and if you change your mind about med school or don’t get in, you have a more useful degree.

thanks guys, that makes sense. I think I’ll just stick with taking the required classes along with some other ones, pre-med as a major doesn’t seem all that useful to me.
