majors for premeds...

I'm gonna be going to college in fall of '11 and was wondering what is the best major for me if I want to go the premed route? From what I hear, there are 2 sides...
A. take a science major so that you are well prepared for med school
B. take a nonscience major so that you can get a higher GPA, and because med schools like "well-rounded" students.......

Where does everyone stand on all this? If I take a random major like philosophy or something, wouldn't that be a waste of time for me and completely irrelevant to what I plan on doing? Or is it a good idea???

Just take whatever you think you’ll enjoy the most. I hate most non-science courses and would get a better mark in a science course than something like English. The med school pre-reqs are fine to prepare you if you don’t want to major in something science-related.

You shouldn’t take a major randomly or out of getting an edge. Take it because you like it.

Sean1218 and mmmcdowe have it right. No major is “better” than any other for a pre-med student, so just pick the one you think you’ll enjoy the most. You’ll experience by far the most success if you choose the field of study you’re the most passionate about, not the one you think “looks better”.

^ How about this: no major looks better than any other major. You should assume that this is true, as most adcoms, if not all, already do. Therefore, choose what you like best, because what you like best will result in a likelier higher grade, and since grade is more important than major (major is negligible), you need to focus on grades (meaning take what interests you).

Given your choices with their associated assumptions (assumptions which are not necessarily true), option B would trump option A by adcoms.
