This might be a weird question but how many majors and minors can you have? I know people do double majors but can you have minors with that? Can you do a triple major with a minor? And since Pre-Med doesn’t count as a major, could you do a double major, minor, and pre-med all together? Any thoughts about this would be great.

I really don't know of a formal limit on majors/minors... I kind of doubt there is one. Double majoring is indeed common, and I do know of people who have had minors on top of that.

Being pre-med with both a major and a minor is also common... I know pre-meds who are double majors as well. Pre-med is demanding, but if you can balance all of the work between everything, it can be done. I myself am a Health and Societies major on the Pre-Med track, and will probably minor in both Sociology and Biology. It's definitely possible.

At the same time (and you'll hear this from your advisors and older students), do NOT feel the pressure to double major, or even major/minor. It will seem like EVERYBODY double majors, but that is not accurate. Picking one major and just doing that is more than OK, the most important thing is that you can take the classes you want to take, do well in them, and build a foundation for the future.

fluffhead: Thanks for the information. I'm just wondering because I'm pretty sure I want to major in Creative Writing but do pre-med with it since I'm considering being a psychiatrist. But I might want to do psychology instead, but then I'd need to major in psychology, too. And then I'd still want to study Spanish and French as I have in high school, maybe adding another language or two to that. Do you know if it's possible to major in Romance Languages in general? Or would I need to minor in each language I wanted to study?

can one just take classes (for example taking up another language) without having to earn a degree in it? I'm thinking about taking two foreign languages, while having a major in psych and maybe a minor in international relations, but there are so many classes (such as history and music and art) that I want to take. Will it be possible to take them all? :D

That's what I'm wondering, too...I feel like I'll be in college for 6 years undergrad, haha

you people all like hardcore know what you wanna do...i have no idea haha..anyone know on average how many classes people take a semester?

another..probably stupid..question...how does a minor differ from a major...obviously its a less important part of your specialty and your degree...but like do you just not have to take as many classes..or what...guess i never really delved into that.

lishnik: It seems like I know what I want to do but I have no idea, haha. I just decided that I don't want to do pre-med at all. I'll double major in creative writing and psychology instead.

I remember reading on the penn site that first semester freshmen can only have 4.5 c.u. and all other semesters you can't have more than 5. That's five classes a semester, usually. I know some courses, like intensive language courses, are worth more than 1 c.u. so if you took on of them, you could only have 4 classes a semester. I'm assuming that people probably take 4 to 5 classes a semester but since you only need 32 c.u. to graduate, you could get away with taking 4 each semester or maybe 3 one semester and 5 the next.

Minors require less c.u. than majors. A major may require 12 while the minor only requires 6, so it's easy to get a minor in something. You don't have to minor in something that goes with your major. I probably won't. But I think people suggest that you do. Or maybe it's just that most people do. I'm not sure.
