Majors other than business and engineering.

Is anyone else undecided? Why did you choose UMich over your state uni or a smaller uni/college? Are you hyped? I know I am!

GO BLUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Most people have some kind of idea what they want to do, but there are definitely undecideds. I entered as an undecided LSA Honors figuring I would do business or engineering, but that maybe something would change my mind. A year later, yep, I'm doing electrical engineering. Not very surprised given my high school background.

I came in wanting to do political science and mathematics and I think I'm sticking to it (dilksy will make a snide comment otherwise), although taking more upper level demographics/health sociology than I ever expected myself to.

Mathematics at UM is said to be REALLY challenging, partially because of the subject material, and partially because of a few TA's, that speak neither English, nor Math very well. Can anyone expound on the experiences of students that take lower level Math courses?

Coming in, I heard the teachers for the lower level math courses weren't great. I took Honors Calc (185), thinking I might get a better professor if I took an honors level course, but the teacher was close to horrible and English was definitely a second language. Basically, the students taught one another... a bit of an overstatement but not far off. Also, the tests included some material we didn't cover in class and we couldn't use a calculator. For those of us from schools with no AP Calc, you have no opportunity to get the better professors.

I have no problem teaching myself when need be. Besides, there are tutoring programs. I could fix the testing on material not covered by reviewing old tests, right?

For lower level math courses, take HONORS APPLIED calc. the grades are inflated and most, if not all students get grades in the A/B range. The professors are also pretty decent(At least the ones I had). I took Math 156 and 255 last year (honors applied calc 2 and 3).

Applied Honors is definitely the way to go. My Math 156 (Applied Honors Calc II) teacher Daihai He told me he will be teaching it again in the fall....that is definitely the class to take. Grades are inflated, I got an A in 156 and a A- in 255.

What about Applied Honors IV though? I'm just taking regular IV in the fall because I thought that Applied Honors III was too much. But on second thought, maybe I should switch.

I'm actually not taking Honors Applied calc 4 this fall because it conflits with my EECS courses. Ive also heard that honors applied calc 4 is harder than regular. But its all rumors and i really have no idea whether it is or not.
