Majors

Please list few low impacted majors at UC Davis that are related to some field of tech. How impacted is cognitive science? or how impacted is biotech?

My stats–
SAT: 1480
GPA Capped: 3.86

Please help me out as I will be applying to colleges very soon

These are the selective (impacted majors) at UCD. Anything not on the list would be your best options.

College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences:
Biotechnology
Viticulture and Enology
Managerial Economics (effective fall 2021)
College of Biological Sciences, all majors
College of Engineering, all majors
College of Letters and Science:
Applied Physics, Physics
Computer Science
Mathematics
Pharmaceutical Chemistry
Psychology
Economics (effective fall 2021)

Some UCD statistical data: 2018 Freshman admit rates for UC GPA of 3.80-4.19 capped weighted and not major specific:
UCD: 41%

2018 UC capped weighted GPA averages:
UCD: 4.11

2018 Data:
25th - 75th percentiles for SAT:

UCD: 1220-1480

Make sure you apply widely and have 2 safety schools on your list.

Best of luck

If you go to the website for UC transfers admissions by major and look at UCD, this will give you some idea on what is hard to get into. Note that this is Transfers, not Freshmen.

Thank you for the info but i will be applying as a freshmen

@Gumbymom Thank you!

I will be applying for fall 2020 term, does that mean I have a good shot at getting into UCD with the choice of economics major? @Gumbymom

I would say that your chances are around 50/50. Your SAT is competitive but your UC GPA is below the 25th percentile so definitely not a slam dunk but possible. You need to apply widely and make sure you identify at least 2 safety schools before compiling the rest of your college list.

Below is what UCD considers in the Freshman application review:

  • DAVIS
    *
  • Very important: Academic GPA, Application essay, Rigor of secondary school record, Standardized test scores

  • Important: Character/personal qualities, Extracurricular activities, Talent/ability, Volunteer work

  • Considered: First generation college student, Geographical residence, State residency, Work experience

  • Note: Scholastic achievement most important, followed by school and community activities, academic interests, special circumstances, special achievements and awards

Admission decisions are made based upon the qualifications of the applicant pool and the number of available spaces within each academic area:
    • College of Letters and Science admits by division within the college
    • (Humanities, Arts and Cultural Studies; Mathematics and Physical Sciences; Social Sciences)

Didn’t you say in the comment above that 2018 admits gpa was around 3.80-4.19? What do you think is an easy major for me to get into (easy as in at least a 70% acceptance rather than 50%) @Gumbymom

UCD does not list their acceptance rate by major. The overall acceptance rate which is not major specific for an applicant with a UC GPA of 3.86 (range 3.80-4.19) was 41%. If you are looking for a 70% acceptance rate, you would need to look at another UC such as Santa Cruz, Riverside or Merced and even then, there is no guarantee. GPA/Test scores/HS course rigor, Essays and EC’s are all contribute to your chances so too many variables to determine your actual chances.

2018 Freshman admit rates for UC GPA of 3.80-4.19 capped weighted and not major specific:
UCB: 10%
UCLA: 9%
UCSD: 34%
UCSB: 38%
UCD: 41%
UCI: 38%
UCSC: 70%
UCR: 84%
UCM: 95%

The Cal states admit by GPA/Tests which translate into an Eligibility index and then you are ranked by your EI and intended major. Acceptances are a bit more straightforward so you can gauge your chances better especially if you know the EI thresholds for any particular major.

oh okay thank you so much for this information!
Do I need to only do one essay for all UC’s? @Gumbymom

You write 4 essays for all the UC’s. You select 4 different topics from the 8 listed: http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/how-to-apply/personal-questions/freshman/index.html

so I just need to write a total of 4 and can apply to all UC’s with the same 4 essays? @Gumbymom

Yes
