Majors?

I will be attending KP class 2013 but I still don't know what major to choose. When do you get more than a half a page explanation on each major and also when do you have to choose which one you will by studying?

I will be attending KP in the class of 2013 as well. When I was there they explained to me that the first trimester or so that you are there you will get a little taste of every major and after that you declare what you'd like to do.

In your first trimester you will take a course called Maritime Professional Studies, (most mids refer to it as "KP100"). You will spend half of the Trimester learning things pertaining to deck operations and the other half learning about engineering. At the end of the trimester you will have to choose a major within one of those two areas. Once you have declared yourself a "deckie" or an "engineer" you will be pretty much locked into that field of study because the curricula begin to diverge almost immediately. However it is possible to make some changes within a particular field if you act within the first year or two.

Thanks that answers everything.

Is it possible to use the few elective course openings to get a minor? I am very interested in history, and would like to focus on that subject in my electives. If I get 12 upper class history credits, can that be counted as a minor?

Also, is there a possibility of testing out of (validating) any required courses such as English or Calculus in order to open up more room for electives? Thank you in advance to anyone who might be able to answer these questions.

Unfortunately it would be very difficult or impossible to get a minor in something like history. There simply aren't enough course offerings in that area to get the credits you would need. I would think the only way you could try to work something like that is to speak to the Dean and the department to see if one of the professors would be interested in working with you on the classes you would want to take. It would be very difficult to get that to work well into your schedule.

My other question is does it only take 12 upper class credits to get a minor in something? I always thought it took more than that, but I definitely don't know.

"Also, is there a possibility of testing out of (validating) any required courses such as English or Calculus in order to open up more room for electives? Thank you in advance to anyone who might be able to answer these questions."

Yes. Exempt yourself from as many courses as you can. You can lower your course load quite a bit, and maybe even take some electives you otherwise wouldn't be able to take. However, if you are very strong in a class you might want to be exempted from, you may want to take it anyways as a GPA booster.

I was thinking along the same lines as USMMA2009 when it came to testing out of some of the classes. A boost in GPA is always nice!
