Hello! I have been accepted EA, but still have yet to visit the campus. I received an email from Miami about Make it Miami recently. In the email, I was notified that I am also invited to attend 3 other special programs: Presidential Open House, University Honors Program and University Academic Scholars Program Breakfast, and Future RedHawk Overnight. Apart from the information included in the email, I haven’t been able to find anything about them. I certainly don’t think it’s reasonable to attend all three since they are all on different days. I am not sure which one I should choose. Has anyone been to any of these and, if so, what were your experiences? Which program do you think would be the most beneficial for me to attend?
This is the information I was given regarding each of the programs:
Presidential Open House -
As one of the universities most accomplished admitted students, you and two guests are invited to a Presidential Open House, and exclusive event at the historic Lewis Place residence on High Street, where you’ll have an opportunity to meet fellow students, faculty, and Miami University President Gregory Crawford.
University Honors Program and University Academic Scholars Program Breakfast -
Join other high-achieving students to celebrate your acceptance at an informal University Honors Program and University Academic Scholars Program Breakfast, where you’ll have an opportunity to meet with faculty and other students selected for Miami’s premier programs.
Future RedHawk Overnight -
Celebrate your acceptance with other future Miamians during the Future RedHawk Overnight, an invitation-only overnight event for diverse admitted students, on Sunday, April 9, the day prior to Make it Miami!
BubbleGirl90, All the information I have shown is exactly the information I was given in my email. No more, no less. I would assume that each event is mutually exclusive, though.
@itscourtneywow I would suggest attending the overnight visit. It will give you a better feel for the campus and help you decide if Miami is a good fit for you. If you end up at Miami, you will have other opportunities to meet President Crawford. He frequently hosts various events and makes it a point to connect with students. There are usually Honors and Scholars open houses at all of the Make It Miami dates.
My son received a the same invite re: Pres open house and the Honors breakfast (we did not receive the future redhawk). Our schedule allows us to attend the Honors breakfast the morning of the Make it Miami day but not the Pres open house. Good luck to you!
Mac001, My D was accepted to UHP & UASP but has not received a breakfast invite. Does your son have any special designation (Farmers, diverse student, etc.)? Do you know if they hold them on more than one Make It Miami date?
I’m a current student in both programs. They are holding UASP/UHP breakfasts on the majority if not all of the Make it Miami dates. The directors just sent us an email to sign up to come
Unfortunately, we cannot attend “Make it Miami” but will be making a campus visit on our own. Does anyone have any recommendations on things to see on campus? What should we be looking at?
@jrduck If you haven’t visited campus before, definitely schedule a tour through admissions. I would also suggest setting up a meeting with an advisor or professor in your student’s major. They might also be able to arrange a meeting with a Miami student in the same major. You should try eating in one of the dining halls or at least in the student center. Be sure to explore Oxford - it’s very walkable and a great college town. We’ve enjoyed several of the restaurants, especially Patterson’s, Bagel and Deli, and Kofenya for coffee.
We are going to the Make it Miami thing this weekend. Son was accepted into the UHP but didn’t get anything about going to an honors breakfast. I’m disappointed! I would have liked to meet some other kids who were accepted into the program.
@Materof2 & esmom18 - My son is from Phoenix and is finishing his sophomore year at Miami, majoring in Biomedical Engineering. He lived in the Honors dorm his freshman year and one of his roommates (and now best pal) is a finance major from Northern Virginia. His other roommate (in a designated triple) was from the San Francisco Bay area. At his Make it Miami visit in 2015, they included an Honors reception in the afternoon.
Thank you @beaudreau very much For the info. Your son’s friend makes at least one other student from Northern Virginia. We live in Loudoun Co. I don’t think there has ever been a student from my sons high school attend Miami. We know zero people there, but everything we have read about the history, the culture, and traditions, not to mention the phenomenal academic reputation have made Miami a top choice. He is also considering Virginia Tech, but he’s narrowed it to those two. There is an engineering seminar on Friday afternoon during the Make it Miami day. I hope he has a chance to talk with some engineering students to get some real world info, tips and expectations.
You mentioned your son lived in the honors dorm his freshman year. To my knowledge, my son is not an honors student. Is there an engineering dorm? Would your son recommend that? And does he have any advice on what dorm to try and choose? Are there any “must do’s” during our visit on Friday? We actually arrive Thursday night and plan on staying until Saturday night as well so he can experience the campus life too. Btw, Biomedical engineering sounds amazing. VT does not offer that engineering specialty.
@Materof2 - My son’s friend is from Fairfax County, I don’t remember which city. I have two other son’s studying engineering, one at Texas A&M and the other at Iowa State. IMO, Honors does not mean as much at Miami as at other public universities. With no PhD students, the focus really is much more on undergraduate teaching. It really does feel more like a smaller liberal arts college.
I think I read that Miami is revamping the living learning communities. There used to be an engineering LLC, but I don’t know if it’s still around.
Virginia Tech is a very good Engineering school. Your son can’t go wrong. Miami is comparatively a smaller engineering program, but is growing pretty quickly. This was a conscious decision and seems to be going smoothly. There were only about 1200 students in 2012. Enrollment is pushing 2000 now. I haven’t heard my son complain about class sizes or not being able to get classes. And it will never be as big as Virginia Tech, Iowa State, or Texas A&M. Counting grad students,TAMU has 16,000 engineering students, which is about the same size as Miami’s total enrollment!
Thank you for this information. I called Miami yesterday was able to schedule my daughter to participate in the Redhawk Overnight and the Make It Miami program on April 9th and 10th. Hopefully, this will help her get information she needs to make a decision between Miami and another school. @Materof2 we are also from Northern Virginia - Falls Church area. There are at least three other students from my daughter’s HS who also attend Miami.
Just an FYI, we are from Loudoun Co also and attending Miami day over spring break. Son is also deciding between Virginia Tech, Miami, Penn State and Purdue. How did you like Miami and the engineering program?
PS I am a Miami Alum
