Lucky for me, my daughter doesn’t have a car. In fact, she doesn’t drive. So I get it. :oD

We’ll, it’s official - I’m a Pomona parent now too! Paperwork is all going in the mail today. D, H and I are just feeling a little apprehensive about the decision to turn down an Ivy (Columbia) for a relatively unknown school to us on the east coast. I do know however that D will thrive and flourish at a school as wonderful as Pomona. I ordered a hoodie, T-shirt, shorts and car stickers as per D’s request this morning. I think she is beginning to get excited! I will def put my cc name on my nametag Aug 22nd, much to my family’s embarrassment I’m sure.

Welcome to the group! I think your D will love Pomona. At dinner last night my D said again how lucky she feels to be able to go to such a great school. A couple of the very smartest kids in her class have decided on Pomona too, so she already knows she’ll be in some fine company.

Fauxmom - just curious. How well known is Pomona where you live?

That’s great news, NJ Mom of 2! It sounds like your D is as excited to be going to Pomona as my S is. He just grins whenever we talk about it. He feels very lucky.

@NJ Mom of 2: It sure looked like a hard decision turning down Columbia for “a relatively unknown school…” but Pomona is a diamond in the rough kinda school. I think you have all made a tough but good decision. My D’s high school was built in 2002 and since 2006 all seniors that have applied to Pomona have been admitted and ALL have enrolled. Not a single one turned down the opportunity. This year, class of 2014, my D and another male colleague made it into Pomona and both have signed up.

Please remember that many at Pomona turned down similar schools to come to Pomona, so your D will be in great company of her equally outstanding peers… as she would have been had she chosen Columbia.

ps: my younger D spent her spring break this year on a 5-day trip to 7 IVYs - Yale, Harvard, MIT, UPenn, Princeton, Brown, Columbia. She came back raving about Yale, Columbia and UPenn… We’ll see if she gets into any of these schools next year… Me, I’d rather see her joining her sister at Pomona next year… would make our lives a lot easier…

In my kids’ high school, Pomona is super-popular. I think at least 10% of the class applies, and only a tiny fraction are admitted. In our area, I’d say a lot of people know of Pomona and know it’s a very good college. A smaller group are really in the know, and are aware of how selective and how great it actually is.

I thought I would resurrect this thread since I used it as reference last night to change my hotel reservations. Thanks azydad - we are now staying at the Best Western in Ontario, I was able to get a rate of $66/night. It is perfect for dropping off our luggage as soon as we land so we can fill the car with purchases made in California. Anyone else staying there?

As a possible tip for those traveling via plane - I made purchases on line for all D’s toiletries at harmondiscount.com and drugstore.com and staples.com for all school supplies- free shipping and it will be waiting for us at Pomona. Just things we can cross off our list as DONE!! Still trying to decide the cheapest way to send boxes - they really must go out by tomorrow to insure that they will arrive on time.

I can’t wait to see the school since I have never been there. It is all very exciting.

Don’t forget to put CC on your nametags! I’d really like to bump into you guys.

We’re staying at the sheraton fairplex. Great idea about mail ordering school supplies! I’m glad Pomona allows early shipping.

NJ Mom of 2, I was just thinking about this thread yesterday as I wanted to remind everyone to put “CC” on their name tags - I’m assuming we’ll have name tags? But FauxNom beat me to it!

We are almost done with our shopping. Our daughter received several Target gift cards as graduation gifts. I have a feeling some of the dorm rooms are going to look quite similar in the beginning!

We are planning on buying larger items at the ReCoop store - bedside drawers, rug, chair, bookcase - as we are driving. Our car will be positively jammed to the roof. When you see the clown car coming around the corner, you’ll know it’s us!

We’re staying at the Comfort Inn Pomona. I am soooooooo looking forward to meeting other Pomona parents!

Rickmanfan, my original reservation was to stay at the Comfort Suites also, but I read 2 or 3 reviews this week all mentioning that although the hotel itself is nice the area around it is not. Someone said they would be afraid to leave things in their car. Since we will probably be leaving so much in the car, I got scared. The Best Western rate was also less on tripadvisor.com - you might want to check it out.

And yes, I will have my name tag on!!

Thanks for the heads up, NJ Mom of 2 - we’ll be sure to set the car alarm!
