Making a Res.Hall/Plaza look good?

So I'm in the process of planning what to bring for my room. I'm in a triple plaza, and we have a shared bath. I know I can get stuff once I get there and I'm going to pack light, but I have a few questions. some of these may seem very sill to some of you so excuse me and thank you in advance:

Do I need to supply a trash can in the room? What about in the bathroom?

I want to bring a desk/task chair, what do I do with the one that comes in the room?

Do I really need Extra Long Sheets?

Can I tack things to the walls? How do you hang things up?

What do you use to decorate your room/walls??

Any tips on closet organization supplies?

Ladies, how do you store your makeup at school? (at desk, in closet, in bathroom, containers, etc.)

Dont need trashcan period.
You can store the chair wherever you want as long as it is back in the room when you move out.
The beds are definitely longer than regular beds. Just grab some sheets from target.
Some of the buildings have tackable walls, others dont. I use scotch tape to hang up posters.
Hangers.
As a guy, I dont own makeup, but I do my store chap stick in the desk drawer.

Cool, Thanks!

I’m in Reiber Vista, does anyone know their “tack” policy??

Oh another one, I have heard dorm beds can have crappy mattresses. Should I get a mattress pad? I know they sell low priced ones at stores like Target… I’m used to a bed with a pillowtop.

I would recommend a mattress pad. I’m definitely getting one and I think I might try to find one with bed bug protectiony stuff. I’ve heard dorm horror stories about bed bugs.

for the make-up question, i brought a bunch of cups (like coffee cups) and stored brushes, lip gloss, eyeliners, etc. in them. eyeshadows/powders can be stored in drawers. also, getting a shoe-rack or hanging shoe-organizer could help too. and definitely get a mattress pad/extra long sheets.

i don’t know about reiber, but generally, tacks will leave holes. get some type of tack, tape or adhesive (that’s easy to take off when the school year ends).

I totally think the extra long sheets are worth it. But I’m short, so I used two full-sized flat sheets. I also used a thick sleeping bag as my comforter – it was so easy to make my bed in the morning.

The egg crate will be the best $10 you spend for your bed.

No tacks in Rieber! use painters tape. theres some fabric walls near the beds where you can tack without causing damage but as far as posters on the other walls, bring tape!!!

what’s the difference between egg crates and normal mattress pads? is one more comfy?

egg crates are like an inch or two of extra padding ontop of your mattress pad

If you have the upper bunk or the lofted bed, is there any way to put like a small shelf on the wall next to your bed.

At orientation, I had the lofted bed and it was a pain in the ass to climb down to my desk to get a drink of water/check the time/turn off my alarm. I just want easy access to my phone and a bottle of water while I’m sleeping.

^ Regarding that, are the beds in RV double rooms lofted? Or is it hit or miss?

Also, kind of a lame question but bear with me: Will you guys be bringing your parents along to move-in? I mean, is it necessary? I just don’t want to be dragging them along to something I can do alone.

If you are top bunk you can get an adjacent desk at the head of the bed. Each desk comes with a shelf bookcase thing and you can use the top shelf as a go-to place for your bedside necessities. It is within arms reach.

Some parents are there at move-in day so don’t feel like a noob for bringing them. If you think you can handle pushing a cart filled with your stuff yourself then by all means come alone.

How exactly does the whole “3 people sharing all of the outlets” thing work? When I was in Sproul Hall for a conference and at Rieber Terrace for Orientation, I could only find a couple of outlets that are in really inconvenient places…

Get crafty with power strips and extension cords.

Haha, yeah, I figured. Thanks :P

to be honest, i bet they’re interested to see where you’ll be living for the next year. so bring them in now, since most parents are coming to “help” them move in, basically judging the area and saying their dear goodbyes. unless you’d rather have them coming in periodically during the school year and embarrassing your life allover again?

Yeah I need my parents to drive me there, since I won’t have my own car. I want them to see where I’ll be hanging out for the next year too. I guess it’s more those two reasons than having them help move my cart of stuff.
