So we just got our housing assignments and I had a couple questions that were generic to all dorms. However, I will be in South College.

How much space are under the beds? Just so I know what size storage containers I should get.

Are there dressers & wardrobes in dorms that don't have closets?

What do people usually do to hang up their towels on? I wasn't sure if 'over the door hooks' would work.

How do you hang up corkboards/dry erase boards on the wall? According to Lafayette's reccommended list at bed bath and beyond, a student can not use nails, tacks, or adhesive tape. Any suggestions?

Does anyone reccommend a clip on lamp or a regular lamp for a desk?

Does the desk or wardrobe contain drawers?

All beds can be lofted upto about 7 feet or so. The space under your bed depends on how high you’re willing to loft your bed. You don’t need to buy anything special to loft it. You can just get there and do it yourself. Personally, I hate having a lofted bed so I keep my bed as low as possible.

Dorms that don’t have closets will have a dresser plus a wardrobe / armoire.

Each wardrobe / armoire will have 2 hooks on the inside of the door for hanging stuff. In addition, some dorms have hooks behind the room door. However, I would definitely recommend getting an over the door hook (get the one with multiple hooks). You can never have enough hanging space.

You can’t use nails. I have used extra strength adhesive tape and have never run into a problem. I’ve never used tacks but I don’t think it should be a problem either.

Lamp type depends on your preference. I use this really big clip on lamp for my study desk and I have a small desk lamp on my dresser which is right next to my bed. You might also want to look into getting those standing floor lamps with 3 - 5 adjustable lights. Alot of people use those and they love them.

The wardrobe will have 2 big drawers attached. The dresser will have 3 big drawers. The desk will have 3 drawers on the side and a 4th long drawer in the middle (like those keyboard drawers they use in computer cabinets).

I also use a foldable closet organizer which is basically this 5 layer shelf thingy that I can hang inside my wardrobe. It’s a really good space saver for me.

thanks for your help! i had a few more questions about what you said.

If I bought an over the door hook and put it on my door, would it still close?

Roughtly, how high are the armoire/wardrobe & the dressers compared to the height of the desk?

Where would you put a tv?

Do you suggest both roommates buying their own printers? And where would you put them?

Thanks again!

Yea the door will still close whether you hang it on the room door or the wardrobe door so no worries about that.

The full height of the wardrobe (counting the drawers) is about 6 feet I think. I’m 5.11 and it’s a little bigger than I am. The desk / dresser is about half of that.

That really depends on the size and layout of your room. You can put it on your / roommates dresser if one of you doesn’t mind losing some space. Some people buy one of those plastic storage drawer sets and place that in the middle between the beds and put the tv on that. Check out the room floor plans to get a rough idea of your room and the space available so you can decide if you want to bring something else to put the tv on. A few people ever put it on top of their wardrobes.

IMO, neither of you need a printer. I’ve had one for two years and I’ve probably used it about 4 times. That’s also because I prefer to type all my papers in the library so i end up using the printers there. If you really want to get one, one printer in the room is enough. You will never need two printers in your room. You will get a standing shelf kinda thing which you can arrange on the floor or attach to your desk so I normally keep my printer on that.

You mentioned you’re going to be living in South. Which floor will you be on coz I’m going to be an RA in south as well.

Ryanshroff, are you there this summer? I’m wondering about the window size on Conway 105. And how do we hang a curtain rod? Those pull-shades are pretty ugly!

@Mom22039:
I’m not going to be on campus this summer.
I’m don’t know how big or small the windows are in conway. I would recommend you check out the floor plans and room dimensions link on the res life webpage and try and figure it out. ([Residence Life at Lafayette College: Welcome](http://reslife.lafayette.edu/))

Honestly, I have no idea how you could set up a curtain rod. The best thing I can think of is to get some of those big self-adhesive hooks and try to set it up that way. Sorry I can’t be of more help with this one

In South, what can and can’t you use to hang things on your walls (other than that gummy stick-um stuff) for cork boards, dry erase boards, etc? Also, where are the laundry rooms in this building? Do kids use those pop-up type hampers, laundry bags, baskets? Trying to envision where they’d put this stuff with no real closets… Thx!

@nj_mom:
For all dorms; nails, screws and tacks should not be used coz those things can really damage the walls and you will be charged for it. I’ve used tacks in the past but that was to hang a flag on the ceiling so it wasn’t noticeable.
Basically, the Res Life rules don’t give specifics about what you can use to attach boards to walls. All they say is that you can only use things that will not damage the walls or the paint. I’ve used extra strength adhesive tape for heavier objects and blue tac / scotch tape for posters.
In South, from what I remember, the laundry room is on either the 2nd or 3rd floor. In most other dorms, the laundry room is generally in the basement. The type of hamper depends on your preference. I use a pop up hamper and a net laundry bag (yes i have two things coz i only do laundry once every 2 - 3 weeks). Just make sure whatever you get - basket, pop up hamper, bags - it has a good handle coz you will have to carry it up and down stairs whenever you need to do laundry.
Where to keep it - basically any spot in your room. Last semester, I left a gap between my wardrobe and the wall and kept it there. You can keep it under the bed as well.

P.S. - in case you didn’t already know, washing machines and dryers are free so you dont have to worry about having enough quarters.

Thanks again for all your help. I will be on the third floor next year!

Ryan, Any thoughts on a shelf that would work with the lofted beds? I’m wondering if you’ve seen anything that clamps over the rail to hold an alarm clock or glass of water.

@ Mom22039 :

I’ve never seen anything like that but that could work. No one I know has something like that either.
Here’s a photo to give you an idea of how the bed frame is set up.
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/hs100.ash2/38346_1529192791762_1292995174_31489113_59642_n.jpg

You will have two removable frame thingys (for want of a better word) at the head and foot of the bed. If you can find a shelf like that, you could clamp it to the frame at either of the ends. Personally, I always make sure I have my dresser or table right next to my bed so I have these things within reach.

I just did a google search for loft bed accessories and came up with this:
[Bedside Tray](http://www.artisticsensations.com/asp/product3.asp?maincategoryid=274&catalogid=41)

I think it is a bit pricey ($49) but I like the idea so will keep looking.
My daughter is at a summer program at Lafayette now and is in a lofted bed in PT Farinon. She is using her cell phone for an alarm clock but would like a shelf for other things.

Yea. I agree that $49 is way too much for one of these things.
If you look at the photo I posted, you will see a horizontal support beam above the mattress. That about a half inch wide. If your daughter wants, she could attach that to the bed frame and use it as a temporary shelf until you buy a good one online.

I hope she’s enjoying the SPAL program. Tell her to make sure she gets out and walks around / explores college hill and center square when she has the time coz once the semester starts it’s going to be impossible to do these things.

What dorm is she in for the semester ?

I don’t know if you guys have seen this already but check it out.

[Amazon Student](http://www.amazon.com/gp/student/signup/info)

It’s a free membership to Amazon Prime for one year. Basically, you will get free two day shipping on virtually all items that you buy off Amazon. It’s only open to college students with valid (.edu) email addresses. It’s going to be really useful for anyone in college, especially if you decide to buy textbooks off amazon

If you do sign up for it, remember to cancel your membership in one year otherwise it will automatically change to paid membership.

We found the Bunk Buddy yesterday and ordered one. I didn’t check the shipping charges but the total should be $20-$25. It has clamps to adjust to the rail. We’ll see how it works!

Mom22039, just looked up Bunk Buddy - that is perfect! Thanks for posting.
Ryan, she’ll be in Marquis in the fall. It was her first choice and she is very excited. SPAL has been great and she is enjoying being on campus.

Thanks for that photo, Ryan. I see now why it’s not necessary to buy something to loft the beds. Looks like the bed frame already accommodates lots of options. That’s great!

By the way, Ryan - in that pic, is that whole frame your bed? Looks like part of a second frame… Just curious. thanks
