I start my first year of college in January (starting a semester late) and I'm going to a community college for two years, then I want to transfer to an out of state university. Will I still make new friends easily and get that college "experience" everyone wants, or will people already have established their group of friends and ways? What about dorms, does anyone still use them after their first two years or not? Is it only a freshman/sophomore thing? Please answer, and any other comments would be good. I'm just worried I'll be left out of a lot of events because I wasn't there the first two years of college, which is the most important time to make friends. Not sure where I'd like to transfer to yet. I have a few colleges in mind though.

I transferred last year.

Dorms: My school has some dorms (apartment style) reserved for upper division/transfer students, if your school has a similar option, that could be a good way to go. I got unlucky and ended up in a dorm that was almost entirely freshmen. They were nice, but I didn’t have too much in common with them… either way, no one’ll care about your age, transfers are generally a year or two older, which isn’t that big of a difference.

Friends: I made a lot more friends in my classes, especially project courses, where the choices were to work together or fail. Of course, my major is EECS, which at my school means large lectures, small sections/labs, and seeing people you know everywhere you go. School clubs and such are also a good way to meet people, just pick something you’re interested in, try going to a couple meetings, and say hello to people.
