Male College Auditions Songs

Hello there!

I am really doubting the songs I have picked to sing so I would like to change them! Most schools require you to sing a contemporary song (1966-2011) and a classic song (1900-1965). And of course, one has to be a ballad and the other an upbeat song. The 2 songs I were originally thinking about singing were "A Bit of Earth" from The Secret Garden and "You're the Top" from Anything Goes. A Bit of Earth isn't age appropriate and You're the Top isn't "Wow-ing" enough. Here are some shows that I was thinking of picking from:

Contemporary:
Bare
The Wild Party
Thoroughly Modern Millie
Tom Sawyer
Urinetown
Avenue Q
Memphis
Title of Show
In the Heights
Shrek

Classical:
Fiddler on the Roof
How to Succeed...
Gypsy
Once Upon a Mattress
West Side Story
Damn Yankees
Guys & Dolls
South Pacific
Annie Get Your Gun
Oklahoma
Anything Goes

Of course I am open to any other suggestions! I consider myself a BariTenor (A3-A4). Thanks so much!

Spensical, you might also try looking at some shows that are a little less well-known. Some of the songs in these very popular shows may be considered overdone. And in general, it’s best to avoid shows that are currently running on Broadway. This would eliminate How To Succeed, Anything Goes, Avenue Q, and Memphis.

Also, make sure you have back up songs in the appropriate categories in case they ask to hear something else, it does happen.

If you LOVE to sing “You’re The Top,” and you can make it your own in a specific situation, then WHY NOT?!?! It can be very “wow-ing” if you do it well! Do what YOU love to do!

Also, you say that “Contemporary” encompasses 1966 onward, but ALMOST all of the titles you list are only from 2000 onward…

I wouldnt sing a song from any of the shows you listed. But I did sometimes do a rogers and hammerstein piece. Its up to you and whatever you can rock, but honestly, there are more obscure shows and pieces that are just as good-if not better- for you.
