Management Consulting Majors

What should i major in if i want to pursue a career in management consulting, but also leave my options open for other careers?

management hehehe

how about finance and econ?

from what ive researched and the books ive read, its not really about the major, they just want hard working and intelligent people. any major that makes you think analytically/creativity and makes you do research would be perfect for MC. for example majors like business, history, english, sciences etc.

i'm at rutgers university (state univ of new jersey) right now. i highly doubt that rutgers grads get jobs at mckinsey, bain, bcg, etc., and i doubt they even recruit on campus. what do you guys think i should do?

get an MBA

Get a wife. Don't rule out entrepreneurship as a major. It basically covers everything in MC.

is 'accenture' one of the top firms for consulting?

same Q as forgiven

c'mon people!

Accenture is probably not in the likes of Boston Consulting/Deloitte/McKinsey, but it is a top firm.

http://www.bain.com/bainweb/Join_Bain/undergraduate.asp

Yeah, not seeing Rutgers there. I wouldn't rule yourself out though. Might as well apply online.

Forgiven, is it possible at Rutgers to get a general BBA or BSBA and then pick a concentration later on in the game? I'm thinking you might be able to just be a general business major and get a job through an internship. Then declare major/concentration after you've got the job.

IBs hire from Rutgers. I've seen many, many of them.

yeah i know IBs hire, but bain, mckinsey, and bcg don't.

That doesn't mean you can't get a job there. If you're good and have work experience just send ur resume...

qwertip, it's not possible to major in general business administration and pick a concentration later on. it'd be nice though.

but anyways, it seems like it's harder to get a job in consulting than ibanking. sheesh..

"If you're good and have work experience just send ur resume..."

99% of time, your resume goes into a shredder.

Well if hes good he can get into a top MBA program after his undergrad and be recruited there.

"Untilted" are you saying that you cant get into IB or Consulting (the top firms) unless they recruit at your school?

Its much harder to break into IB or Consulting if they dont actively recruit at your school.

Anyway, with my school it's finance kids who are recruited for consulting.

""Untilted" are you saying that you cant get into IB or Consulting (the top firms) unless they recruit at your school?"

I was talking about the top consulting firms only, since they recruite relatively few people straight out of undergraduate. You either go to a target school or you network REALLY well (with your current school's alums as well as your relatives/friends).

Investment banks have more positions available, but more competition as well. It's possible to apply online and send in resumes, but the chance is tiny.
