Management Consulting or Investment Banking

Is it possible to break into management consulting or investment banking from UCSD. I'm not just talking about any particular firms either. Basically, does anybody know of anyone who has recently graduated and now has a consulting job at either Bain, BCG, or McKinsey. Likewise, how about BB (bulge bracket) i.e. Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, JP Morgan, Credit Suisse, Citi, and BoA for investment banking?

Also, if so, how?

Not likely(and I’m not just talking about any particular firms either) because nobody recruits here. UCSD is ok if you plan on attending professional school or grad school, or if you major in biotech engineering or computer. For everything else, there’s mastercard but not decent jobs.
You best bet is to go to a target school, i.e. HYPSM. Next best is to go to Cal and fight your way into Haas.

You sir, are mistaken. I don’t agree with “For everything else, there’s mastercard but not decent jobs.” You basically are implying that all graduates are equal, and that a top performer cannot break into consulting or IB.

Anyway - my questions wasn’t what are the chances? I already know that they are slim to none. My question was do you know of anyone who has done so?

No big consulting/IB firms recruit on campus, so this already makes getting a foot in the door slim to none.

SD, though great for biotech, doesn’t have much of a finance/business presence, making it even harder to find something proximal to intern at.

I know plenty of people working as entry level analysts/consultants at a lot of smaller firms and startups, but none who’ve been able to network into Bain, Goldman, JPM, etc.

Almost every possible thread I’ve done a search on has said the same thing. Yet I’ve been interviewing with some firms for summer internship positions including Bain.

Also, Deloitte, PwC, and ZS Associates (VERY solid firms) are all recruiting on campus this year so UCSD isn’t entirely off the map.

Come on guys, where’s the belief? It’s as if everyone has already given up before they’ve even tried…
