Is it possible to land an internship with a prestigious management consulting firm if I haven't done any internships? I'm going into my junior year and I haven't landed an internship yet. I go to UT Austin.

I know the interview case problems are a big part of landing the actual job or internship, but do you think it's still normal to get an interview if I don't have any relevant work experience?

It depends on how competitive the company’s internship program is. Most companies will understand that as a college junior, you won’t have any relevant job experience. I got my first internship with a major production company with zero experience.

However, with as bad as the economy is and how desperate people are for any sort of work, you may often times see graduates and people with tons of experience trying to get the same internships as college students.

It really depends on the company, but I don’t see anyone expecting a college junior to have much relevant work experience.

It isn’t necessary to have a prestigious internship to get interviews at management consulting firms in general. However, since UT-Austin isn’t a target, (at least for MBB), prior internships may be more important. Really what they want to see is SAT scores, GPA, and extra-curriculars that show you may be able to function socially.

After you get an interview, it’s all about how well you do on the cases.
