Managing 3 AP Classes and SATs with EC's

2nd semester has just started and with 0 period Health and Tennis and Lacrosse I need help with managing my time so that I can ace my AP classes(APUSH, AP Lang, and AP Bio) with studying for SAT's in March(something I should have studied for the first time I took them). Basically with Tennis and Lacrosse I will leaving home at 6:00 am and be getting home at about 6:30 to 7:00 PM everyday except Tuesday and possibly Thursday depending on when my games are. Now assuming it takes me a half hour to eat and shower that means I will be starting HW at 7:30. So I was wondering if it was possible to handle all this and still ace the classes and SATS and whether anyone has actually done so?

Wait til you manage 7 APs, SAT, and other crap

You just gotta do what you gotta do

What year are you in school?

I think most people on this site have all been through something similar including myself.

Last year I took a HEAVY courseload (not to downplay yours, but mine was heavier…) and managed really intense ECs, a part-time job and other stuff. Did I feel burnt out at times? You bet. It wasn’t always easy to get a lot of sleep but I loved what I did and don’t regret it. Don’t forget - you only go through high school once so don’t do stuff that you find miserable. Don’t get too stressed out and remember to take care of yourself. I love how busy I’ve been in high school. It’s not always easy but I’ve made some of my best friends because of our mutual busy lives and grown close to so many people that it’s been a blessing rather than a burden. If you hate it, don’t do it. Cherish high school. You only do it once.

And as jesskidding said, you have to do what you have to do. Kids handle a lot more than what you’re describing and come out just fine. But if your heart isn’t into it, then you’re just setting yourself up to fail.

So to answer your question, yes it’s possible.

Last year I had practically the same schedule as you do now! Except I also had honors pre-calc and honors chem, and I only had swim for a couple hours a day. I aced the classes, but I kinda didn’t study for the SAT haha. I managed to pull off a 2200 though!

Good luck, junior year (I’m assuming) was a pain.

Just for clarification I am a Junior and my classes this year are

APUSH
APBIO
APLANG
Math Analysis
Latin 1/2
Music Tech
Health

and the only thing that I’m worried about is the whole coming home at 6:30 to 7:00 PM a majority of the week and how I’m gonna be able to finish my homework and still get enough sleep to wake up a 5:25 AM, hopefully I’ll be able to bring my books to school and do my homework at lunch so that could help out a bit.

lol the number of APs you have plus the subjects they are in = child’s play

Try not studying for SATs and doing well on them regardless.

Not trying to be a jerk or anything, but I sort of agree with HSMCCP. I get that it seems scary now, but you’ll get used to it. If you want to take APs and do heavy ECs, then sacrafices will have to come. It’s going to take some determination, sure, but so many other kids juggle a schedule much more difficult than yours. At my school, your schedule wouldn’t even put be in the top 20% of difficult schedules persay. I don’t think it’s bad that you’re nervous about it, but just remember that it is possible and if you don’t suceed it’s not because it’s impossible or anything.

Record your Latin vocab or Bio stuff and listen to it in the car. Eat lunch by yourself and do your homework or take a mental break. Get books on tape and use those (one of my personal favorite things to do…I like to listen to it on tape while I run so I have a general sense of what’s going on, then come home and read it to catch all the details). Also, study for the SAT on the weekends.

you could try to get ahead on your HW on the weekends and breaks too. yes, it’s a large time sacrifice, but that’s what happens when you choose to have heavy ECs and a heavy schedule. if it seems like too much, then drop some things.

I mean, you can’t control time. these are your choices. good luck!

Hi there!

I don’t know what kind of school you go to, but if yours is as hard as mine is, 3 APs can be a killer. And unlike HSMCCP said, those three APs you’re taking are some of the hardest at my school. I think everyone responding is trying to help, but they might not know how much stress you’re under. So take what people are saying with a grain of salt, because people on here can be intimidating. :)

Don’t let other people undermine the difficulty of your schedule – it’s a hard one! But put all the effort you have into it and I promise you’ll do well. And ECs should be something you love doing, not something that stresses you out. But if everything’s too much, you can always take a mental health day!

Honestly, Lang shouldn’t be considered an AP class, there is no studying required, and you don’t need to learn anything for it.

I ran into a similar situation my first senior semester. I basically stacked myself with a rigorous course load and had to prepare for the SAT in October.

Sad to say, I didn’t study for my SAT. In hindsight, it was completely possible for me to finish my work (I just didn’t plan ahead). As long as you know what you are doing, and you do your work, I’m sure you can manage it. :)

@candekabra lol brb humanities = not hard. lol brb college classes will be 3x harder than AP’s

Honestly you kind of just need to suck it up and pull through. As much as it sucks we’re ALL in the same boat, and a lot of others (as much as we all secretly hate them) manage to do so much more than us and still have time to enjoy their selves. For me at least I’ve learned that getting a lot of sleep isn’t a top priority when there is so much I want/need to do.

Shevane- Yea I think I’ll have to just do that even if it means losing sleep cause to be honest I’m pretty stubborn about playing Lacrosse and Tennis this spring. I love both sports and am ready to be fully committed to playing both and still getting good grades. I think I’ll just do the homework early on and at lunch so that I can come home, study, and rest and then on the weekends I can study for the SATS during my break at community service, on Saturday night, and Sunday.

Every AP is different depending on the school it is taught at. They may not be half as hard as college curriculum will be, but they can still be fairly difficult. Add that to the physical exhaustion of playing two sports that require a lot of energy, and it’s tough to get everything done and keep going. Not everyone can survive on 3-4 hours of sleep per day and still expect to excel at everything they do.

Try six APs senior fall plus both SATs and SAT subject tests (didn’t plan very well) in addition to a 25+ hour a week sport and a job while trying to do college apps and having some semblance of a social life.

This thread is turning into people whining about how their lives are harder than yours…quite arrogantly actually…

I have a similiar schedule (4 APs) and I find that focus is key. Don’t waste your time, and you should be fine. That’s easier said than done but do things like turning off the Internet, setting time limits for studying per subject, etc. Try to get to bed by 12 or at least 1 because sleep deprivation adds up and then you’ll just be screwed. Good luck!

Lol OP, I’m in the same boat as you. Except for the tennis part. (I thought lax and tennis were during the same season…how are you doing both simultaneously?)

Anyways, you’ll be OK. Don’t worry about people belittling your schedule because they are busier. Everyone’s stressed this time of year, so it may be hard to get sympathy from fellow CC’ers.

If it gets hard, just sing Dory’s song from Finding Nemo:
“Just keep swimming, just keep swimming, just keep swimming, swimming, swimming, what do we do, we swim, swim, swim.”

catchtwentythree-I talked to both coaches who said it was alright just that I would need to balance out practice times and so far the schedules don’t overlap so tennis I would go from 3 to 4:50 and lacrosse from 5:00 to 6:30/7:00. Then my tennis matches are on Tuesday and Thursday and even though I will be a varsity player for sure there are still 3 non-starters so I’ll just switch off and be a starter on one day and not play the other day which will leave me to go to the lacrosse practice from 3:00 to 6:30/7:00 that day.

alwaysleah- I just ignore them it’s not worth arguing over schedules and why I didn’t make mine harder or why mine is “child’s play” and shouldn’t count as AP.
