Mandarin

Kid has been studying Mandarin since Kindergarten in non-immersion school. Doing Startalk and applying for NSLI-Y. Stem-oriented female. Besides government/foreign service jobs, does Mandarin offer a benefit in the job market? (Asking b/c I’ve seen others before her where it did not.) Kid deciding whether to start a new language in college with more range (like Spanish) or trying to continue Mandarin. In particular, kid is interested in a gap year. Would Spanish or Mandarin offer more job advantages?

If your daughter is sufficiently advanced in Mandarin, then she could consider introducing Spanish in college while continuing her Mandarin studies. Ten courses across these two languages/literatures would not be unrealistic, even if a major in an unrelated field were chosen. However, a college with a relatively unrestricted curriculum might be preferred for this goal.
