@KP514 Based on your daughter’s experience can you share any thoughts on the Arches program or any of the first year housing options? Thank you!
@aimster888 my daughter opted into the Arches program and loved it. Arches students reside in Lee Hall (newest dorm) in suites (2 bedrooms accommodating 2-3 in each bedroom with one shared bathroom). She loved everything about Arches. Arches students move in about a week earlier and do group activities (Coney Island was one off campus trip). They also take one course (for credit) each semester of freshman year with other Arches students. There are required service components in the community associated with these courses and the program as a whole. The RAs conducted floor activities to keep the students engaged. It was a great way to meet new people and form friendships.
My daughter chose to stay in Lee for her sophomore year so I don’t have any information about the other dorms.
Good luck everyone!
Thanks for sharing.
@KP514 Thank you so much for the information. When we visited during one of the Open House events I was talking to several of the students in Lee dorm who had volunteered to show their rooms during the housing tours and they said many of the same things. It seems like a nice way to be a part of a community pretty much right away and I think that’s a good thing. I hope your son gets good news soon! ?

@aimster888
She also had a deferral from Point Loma yesterday which upset her. Funny thing is, she doesn’t want to go there. An admissions counselor from the college said she would likely get a scholarship.
Similar thing happened to S17 with one of the ‘elite’ SUNYs. He applied EA, was deferred, then waitlisted, then rejected…all after being courted by a regional admissions rep. Unsure if he would have attended if he was admitted.
Very upsetting.
I know that the admissions representative’s job is to attract potential students, but they should be able to do that without making “promises” they don’t intend to keep. I’m a high school teacher (all upper class men in my course) and it’s hard on kids when they are let down and it doesn’t seem to make sense, and quite frankly some of it doesn’t make any sense with the facts that the kids are allowed to see. Plus, kids don’t have much of a frame of reference yet to help them put this all into perspective. Somehow, it usually does seem to work out positively in the end, but it’s hard to go through these experiences with them.
