It is very exciting and I hope that we run into you all there - it will be fun to meet you! My daughter actually was able to sign up for the admitted students day in the 7th so we’ll definitely be there then. She also applied for the Arches Program. We are very excited fo that opportunity and have our fingers crossed that she’s in time for that. We haven’t received the financial aid letter, but are not really expecting anything there - the merit scholarship was what we were hoping for and that came through. Anyway, hopefully our kids will cross paths (she’s a biology major) and we will too. ?
@aimster888
Great, I will let you know when we decide to visit. April 7th probably makes the most sense so that we can leverage the weekend since going out there burns a day.
We are going to the April 7th session. We get in late Thurs and go back Tuesday.
Congratulations to all ! ! My son is graduating this May and has been very happy with his choice. Just one cautionary note about the merit scholarships, you can lose them in part or whole is your CUM goes below 2.90. This is a little different than other colleges, although you always need to read the small print. For those in the school of engineering it can happen a lot easier than you think, so beware. If you look up national average CUMs for engineering degrees /students you will see what I mean. MC has a strong program and many of those classes they do not give away grades. This is true in other majors too (sciences). Also, in many classes you have to get a C or hirer for it to count, or you need to repeat. Again, sounds like it won’t happen but it can and does. Engineering seems to have more of these classes than the other majors. Also, as the school is small many classes are only offered in some semesters, and often with one prof, the very unyielding one who did not give you a C the 1st time. Beyond that the community is great, and proximity to the city is awesome. Best of luck.
@Spark2018 Thank you for the heads up! My older child has a merit scholarship at Fordham and his CUM has to remain at a 3.0 or higher to keep it. Way back in the dark ages I had a similar scenario and needed to keep a 3.25. I think that’s a pretty standard requirement but a good reminder and good first hand advice regarding the potential restriction of options in certain courses and faculty. Good luck to your son after graduation!
We were in NYC this weekend (visiting my other child who goes to Fordham) and got to go and visit campus again. My daughter was excited to show her brother around “her” college and it was great to see her excitement.
Manhattan College has such a pretty and interesting compact campus. I love how they take advantage of the hill to have buildings at different elevations and that many have entrance points at different heights. The campus is so clean and well maintained and the students that we saw were friendly enough to smile as we passed by. My daughter was excited that she already knows she’ll be living in Lee Hall (Arches Program) - it’s a great building and right next to the dining hall and very close to the library and science building. Speaking of which, we walked by the construction at what will be the new engineering and science building and it will be amazing!
Lastly, we walked down to the train station to see where that was and what commercial options were around. There was a large Rite Aid drugstore, Chipotle, Subway, Wild Wings, McDonalds, and Dominos. There was a great diner that we went to for brunch/lunch. The one thing I didn’t see (but hubby looked up on map and I guess it’s just further down the block - a Shop N Save) was a grocery store. There is a BJs but there’s not really space in a dorm room for bulk size purchasing.
I thought maybe some of you who now know that you’ll be attending Manhattan College might be interested in this info of what’s nearby. The bookstore isn’t open on weekends so we didn’t get the chance to go in and buy some Jasper “swag”. I hope it will be open for admitted students day on April 7th because it’s not as fun to just order that stuff online.
Go Jaspers! ?
Thanks for the commentary @aimster888 !
It is likely my daughter will attend but we are not sure. Thanks for your impressions. Our first visit will be in April so it will be interesting to see what my daughter thinks about the school.
Glad to hear your visit went well.
There is another pizzeria up on Waldo Ave and 238th st, I believe, called Gooodfellas. My Jasper Sophomore daughter (who lives in Lee and loved Arches) LOVES the food there. Not a far walk, just south of Kelly Commons, up the hill.
You must have visited the infamous Riverdale Diner. We have been enjoying that place since my husband was a student at MC in the late 80s. If I’m not mistaken, they offer a discount to MC students w/ their school ID.
There is a Target not too far away. I think my daughter said it’s 2 stops down on the 1 train.
I assume the bookstore will be open for accepted students day, as I recall It was open when we visited with my daughter 2 years ago for her accepted students day.
My son and I will be attending accepted students day on 4/3. He plans on applying to Arches too. Computer Science major. Hope to meet some of you that day!
You’re also a 30 minute, $2.75 train ride away from the center of the greatest city on Planet Earth.
Having raised three kids in Manhattan, I would seriously encourage your DC to get into Manhattan every available free moment they have. The list of things to do and see is literally endless.
@KP514 We did get up there very briefly and saw the other pizzeria (Goodfellas) and a deli (Jaspers Deli, I believe). Plus I think that’s where the apartments for some of the upperclassmen are - very short walk from main campus. Yep, the Riverdale Dale Diner, which had great selection and yummy food, offered a 15% discount to college students of the Bronx (son from Fordham was psyched that he’d get the discount too if he came to visit) with valid ID. @STEM2017 My two kids have already figured out that they can meet at Columbus Circle pretty easily to go on into Manhattan. We used TKTS this weekend to get same day theater tickets and went to see Kinky Boots (it was so fun) and then we had drinks at The View at the Marriott Marquis afterwards. Really great experience!
Honestly I’m jealous of all the fun my kids are going to be having while at school! @JBSeattle I sure hope you guys will love it. Hope to see you all at some point. @KP514 I’m sure our kids will get to know one another through Arches (there’s like 100 kids, right?). @STEM2017 and @JBSeattle do you know if your kids are interested in the Arches Program as well?
Story to talk your “ears” off… it’s all getting good now! ?
Unfortunately, it is unlikely that my son will end up at Manhattan College. He’s spent the last 18 years in Manhattan and he’s ready for a change (at least a temporary change). I love everything about MC, but I cant really blame him.
But I would still highly recommend MC for any kid who wants a domestic urban adventure unlike any other.
@STEM2017. I totally get it - neither of my kids would even look at any of the good schools we have here in Rochester. College is a great time to stretch your wings and experience new places and learn new things. Best of luck!
@aimster888
My daughter was initially interested in Arches but has been talking to other kids who are swaying her towards other options.
We are visiting Ohio Wesleyan now. My daughter was pretty uninterested in visiting but due to a large scholarship and potential for more she agreed to visit. They are giving her a tough decision now as they have rolled out the red carpet. This school could be cheaper than our cheapest in state option, most of the classes are about 15 students and a bunch of other awesome things. Manhattan has their work cut out for them!
@JBSeattle it’s great to have options! Good luck and enjoy the process. ?
Very helpful thank you worried about that for sure but we still want our son at MC it feels right .
@mom05. ?
aimster888 - All upside to Arches. At the top of my list was the fact my son was in an upgraded dorm year 1. I’m telling you, either at MC, or any other college, Freshman dorms are rarely at this level. Short sighted on my part, as Arches is about a lot more than the dorm and community of freshman. No matter how social we all think are kids are, they are in a new place with new people and new stresses. Many will navigate that on their own, some will struggle. Either way, Arches makes it all happen sooner, and minimize those who may not make it. Following my kids HS classmates, I’m amazed how often their dream schools turns into a disappointment, the majority of the time because feeling they ‘don’t fit in’, feel isolated, or left out. And I’m talking about kids in HS who were BMOC, athletics, club leaders, with robust social circles. This happens in that 1st period between the start of the semester and Thanksgiving. Arches combats this. I strongly recommend getting into Arches if you can.
Just realized we are scheduled to accepted students day on April 7 as well looking forward to visiting again and meeting future Jaspers .
@mom05 and @aimster888
We will be there on April 7th. Look out for the Pac NW looking people with North Face jackets, lol.
Has anyone heard of the Saint La Salle Honor Society?
