Hi, I was wondering what the "manual" meant on telebears. I have a senior friend enrolled in this class that I need. She wants to drop out so that I can take it. I'm on the waitlist and might not get in. I was wondering if "manual" allowed me to do so. The class is going to be put on manual next week.

Nope, it will not allow you to do so. Automatic means the computer processes the waitlist, i.e. the next available position will be given to the person who has the highest waitlist position for the lecture (need not be 1) AND highest for the section he/she waitlists for (need to be 1).

Manual means the department, or the professor, can cherry-pick which students to admit to the class, meaning if you are a graduating senior and you absolutely need to take that class, even if your waitlist position is over 9000, you will still get in before everyone else.

Telebears, unfortunately, are not smart enough to let somebody take the spot of his/her friend, so you have to go to the back of the waitlist and start from there like everyone else.

Just out of curiosity, how do people ‘switch’ with their friends then? I see so many emails and bSpace chat on this topic. I don’t think it’s possible either, but people keep posting about it. Beginning to think such feature does exist lol!

@Calicious: Some class don’t use Telebears to keep track of attendance and whatnot. Specifically, I know for sure CS61B w/ Shewchuk and AstroC10 w/ Filipenko this semester don’t use them. To switch sections, both person have to email both TAs (meaning 4 emails) to confirm with them, then it’s done. They only need to change their bookkeeping, probably using Excel, and not using Telebears (since even the instructors know that it’s crap)

Otherwise, it works exactly as what meakame said.
