Manual review

If your application still shows the manual review option, will they use first semester grades as a final decision factor if you just had grades come out. My son loaded up his final year with 4 AP classes after I suggested so and he got his first C in high school in AP Calc and I am wondering if this could be the deciding factor .

They don't know your first semester grades unless you send them. They are making decisions based on grades through junior year

They dont care about your semester grades.

My son was denied today and I am ****ed off. His friend who was admitted right away back in September with lower GPA and class rank at same high school but had a higher ACT score. He also had less EC'S than my son but he did have the one thing my son didn't have, a father who went to Illinois and schmoozes with all the admissions people and has "connections". If that's the way they operate I'll be glad he will go to Wisconsin or Indiana or Ohio State, even though it might cost him more.

did that person also apply for business?

Yes he did. But like I said his father has connections and had gone down there last summer to introduce his son to the admissions people. I guess it makes a difference.I really thought they compared kids from the same schools records against each other but I guess not.

what was your sons GPA and ACT score? and when did you submit his app?

3.7 GPA and 27 ACT . 1290 SAT

in my opinion, it was the ACT that might have been the reason why he was denied. 31 is the border line for the top admittance of teh top 25%
did you send both the ACt and SAT or just one.
If you sent both, that was a bad thing to do.

what was your sons friend's ACT and gpa?

30 ACT 3.5 gpa just barely in the top 15% , I did send both, the other thing is the other kid had no EC'S at all where at least my son had a great two year work record that didn't matter. He interns at a bank and has responsibilities that full time employees have that high school interns don't but his boss feels he is mature enough to do.

i don't think uiuc considers legacy to be that much of an important factor in admissions unless they like donate alot of money.

did your son make the priority filing deadline? i know they go easier on the kids who apply before november 15th. so the admissions office may have been tougher on your son if he missed the deadline.

Everything got there Nov. 1, and regarding legacythis kids dad had taken him down there to meet admissions people late last summer and other people that he knows since he has his own network of people thru friens and former classmates. If I had those connections I could guarantee we would have been sipping champagne last night celebrating his admission.

Your S will love Madison if he goes there. And working through the AP courses will give him a good preparation for his freshman year.

Don't be so bitter about it, its the way our country works, its all about who you know and how well they like you. Personally I would much rather go to Wisconsin or Indiana over Illinois anyway, unless your in state and banking on the money. Your son's stats are similar to mine, did he already get into wisconsin? I got into Indiana but postponed at Wisconsin and no word yet from Illinois. Anyway, don't be bitter towards your sons friend who got in because its all about what you do once you get to college. You can only rely on legacy to get you in, once your their its up to you.

I don't know how much they look at GPA at Illinois because i was accepted with 3.0 UW GPA and 1310 SAT, 27 ACT

hmm, which college in uiuc? cuz your stats depends on which college.

LAS...im assuming thats easiest

actually ACES is the easiest
and engineering and business are like equally the hardest
