Hi, im incoming pre-med student.
I was planning to take BILD3, CHEM6A, MicroEcon, Math 20B.
However, I realized BILD3 is full..

I got 4 on AP chem, so im exempt from Chem 6A
so Should I just take BILD1 instead of BILD3 and Chem6A instead of Chem6B?
cuz.. BILD1's prerequisite is CHEM 6A + CHEM 6B(can be taken concurrently)
leaving me with... BILD 1, CHEM 6B, MicroEcon, Math 20B.

Would it be too hard to start from chem6b instead of chem6a?
also, would it be too hard to start with two science courses as freshman yr?

Last Question: Do I get lettered grade and does it go into my GPA for classes that I am exempted already?

take chem 6b, it's a waste of your time (and AP money) to take classes you've already passed out of. you won't be getting credit for 6a if you were to take it anyway.

as for the other class, take whatever you want -- i don't think two science courses is hard (hell, i've taken 18+ units of science classes in a single quarter),but if that doesn't sound like fun to you, just replace it with a GE.

ty for the reply.
Yeah I should take chem 6b and BILD1

and another question was that.. I understood how im not getting credit for the class that I am exempt for, but do I still get the lettered grade that affects my GPA?
because I got 5 in Calc BC ap so I also am exempt from 20 ab.. might as well just take 20 c if i dont even get the easy A for gpa boost from 20b

if you're not getting any credit for the class, how on earth would it affect your GPA?

i thoguth credit and gpa were separate things. For the pre-med requirements, I need to take Chem 6abc anyways.
( Revelle College - UCSD )

so are you saying it will stay in my transcript for Med school, but not affect my gpa..?

ive been wondering that same thing exactly

If you get no credit for a class, it cannot affect your GPA.

GPA is calculated differently in college than it is in high school because different classes have different numbers of units (i.e., credits). The more units a particular class has, the more weight it has on your GPA. To calculate your GPA:

((Number of units for Class A x GPA value for class A) + (Number of units for Class B X GPA value for class B) + etc)/total number of units

Where GPA value =4 for A, 3.7 for A-, 3.3 for B+, 3 for B, etc., and the number of units depends on the class. So, if you are not taking a class for credit, you will be getting 0 units for the class, so it won't contribute to your GPA.

Oh ok thanks for making it clear..
not familiar with college gpa system yet.. haha
but these re-taken classes stay on transcript for med school (but not affect my UCSD gpa), right?

yes.

(read the archives.)

do most med schools recalculate gpas and include grades received from such "non-credit" courses that a student takes, even though they've passed out of them with AP credit, or do the med schools typically just use the UCSD GPA??

nope.

but i'd check the med school forums, you'll probably get your answer in less than an hour.
