When did they open Manzanita Hall? Does anyone know the housing charges for a double suite in this location? It is not listed on the housing rates?

I’m not sure on the exact reason they reopened it (probably money issues) but the decision was made over the summer and that’s why it’s not on the housing rates list. Just like last year, only half of it will be open.

Last year, I paid $4,300 to live in Manzy and it was the cheapest hall. And I know they increased most of the housing rates for this year, but I can’t imagine them raising the housing rate too much because of its condition. If you have been assigned there already, the fee should show up on your myasu underneath the financial aid tab…

I think it was pretty recently if it’s not on the housing rate sheet, they must have had an overflow of housing apps or something. But like sakalr said, it’s the cheapest hall because of it’s condition. Hopefully once they close it completely to renovate it will be much nicer. :)

Also, if you don’t want to be in Manzy you should try to get on the waiting list for other dorms. A lot of people are reporting that their assigned roommates are not attending ASU but haven’t notified yet.

I’m ok with Manzanita and saving money. I was just surprised it should up when it was not an option.

I actually just saw on the fb group that apparently all manzy housing is temporary and that anyone living there will relocate later on? Not sure if that’s confirmed or not but thought I’d pass it on.

Manzanita will be open all year. I know people who have been hired to work in the building for the full year. You’re right though, I think it will be used as temporary housing for people who have been wait listed for other halls (like Hassayampa) but not all of the students living in Manzy will be moved to other halls.

Findmepete: If you have any questions about Manzy, feel free to ask me! I also have pictures of my room if you want to see those. :)

Thank you Sakalr. Seeing the pictures of your room would be great and will probably answer several questions I have. Is there a mini ref or micowave? Are the beds bunked with the desk underneath? Can they be un-bunked? Did you bring a carpet? How did you and your suitemates decide on keeping the bathroom clean and buying supplies, etc? Are the “a” rooms facing a certain side or does that pertain to the bed assignment? What’s the best and worst about Manzy? Thanks for taking the time to answer.

ASU dorms dont come with fridges/microwaves. You can rent them, but its the same price or cheaper to just buy one. The beds are not bunked its just a basic twin bed frame. Depending on the room, youll either get a new, smaller desk or an old wood desk attached to the wall with a lot of shelving (what is in my pictures). The rooms are carpeted and it really depends on the room that you get what condition it is in. Some of the rooms have been renovated and have new carpet and others have the original carpet. In my experience, the lower floors seem to have the newer things.

I became good friends with my roommate and suitemate (I only had one) and we didnt really didnt have set rules for cleaning and supplies. If it was dirty, one of us just cleaned it and we naturally took turns. We also pretty much took turns buying toilet paper. I had friends who didnt talk with their suitemates though and they just used their own toilet paper and brought it in and out with them. And if the bathroom needed cleaning, they would confront their suitemates and decide on it. I suggest setting guidelines for this in the very beginning of the year so everyone is on the same page.

Since only half of the building will be open for residents, the A really has no important meaning for you. There is an A wing and a B wing. If you are standing at the entrance and looking at Manzy, the A wing is the left side of the building. You can pretty much disregard the wings. If I remember correctly, even numbered rooms are facing the stadium and the Tempe Town Lake area (north) and odd rooms face towards campus.

Best and worst? Thats kind of hard to answer briefly! Manzy does have some flaws… There are some gross stains in some of the hallways from people who had way to much fun some nights. The elevators sometimes get sticky from a mixture of things especially over the weekend when custodial isnt there to clean them. Elevators often break down and if you live on an upper floor, you end up waiting awhile for a ride. The building itself is also not in the best condition but you learn to live with these things. Also, there are no community kitchens in any of the lounges. There are some good things though! Manzy has a great sense of community and since only half of your floor will be occupied, you really get to know all of the people on your floor. You also have your own thermostat in your room not all dorms have that so you can control how hot or cold your room gets. There are also walk in closets so lots of extra space. And if you are on an upper floor, an amazing view! (but it does suck walking down 14 flights of stairs when there is a fire drill!) Another little tidbit is that pretty much every room in Manzy is unique. Some are the traditional square shape, some are bigger than others, and some have really weird angled walls (like my room was).

Findmepete, I will send you a link to all of the pictures in a PM. I remember reading somewhere on here that you’re not supposed to post links to personal pictures so I don’t want to chance it. If anyone else wants to see the pictures, just PM me. :)

Also, if you go to Facebook and search “Manzanita 2009-2010” in the groups sections, you should be able to see all of the pictures uploaded to that group of someone’s room. :)

Great info and thank you. What kind of meal plan did you have freshman year? Any suggestions in this area? Now that I have seen the dorm, was there a favorite hangout, study location, or eating area? How often did students go home duting the semester?

Your welcome!

I had the all M&G because I liked being able to go to the market or the Memorial Union to get food when I didn’t want dining hall food or if they were closed. I also liked eating frozen meals in my room. I liked not having to worry about wasting money because I didn’t use all my meals up (depending on the meal plan, most meals expire at the end of the week but there is one meal plan where it expires at the end of the semester). Any leftover M&G from your first semester transfers over to the second semester but after that, it expires.

I can’t say that there were any “hangout” spots that I used. It really depends on what crowd you go with or who your friends are in the hall. My friends and I usually hung out in the lounge or in somebody’s room. If you smoke, there seemed to always be people smoking right outside of Manzy. Manzy Square and Devil’s Diner/Greens/Bistro are the places nearby where people eat.

Again, it really depends on the person. I knew people who went home almost every weekend because they lived close to campus and had jobs and stuff. Whereas my house is 30 minutes from campus and I only went home a couple times during the year. And then of course there are the out-of-state students who aren’t able to go home much except for breaks.
