Maple Street and Magazine Street

Can someone please tell me about the neighborhood around Tulane? It looks like quite a distance from downtown New Orleans and the French Quarter (both which are nice to have but not where students seem to spend their time.) I've heard Maple Street is where kids hang in restaurants, etc. And I've heard Magazine Street is the shopping street. How far are they from campus? Are they really student hang-outs? Any maps? Photos? Thanks.

Magazine Street starts right on the other side of Audubon Park. It is 7 miles of shops, cafe’s restaurants, bars, antique stores etc. Maple Street is uptown from Tulane across Carrollton. Funky shops and restaurants and bars. Also Freret street runs through campus and has really been developing a lot over the past year or two with restaurant, arts and farmers markets. I don’t know how much time students actually spend hanging out in those ares but they are relatively close and offer alternatives to campus dining, some shopping etc.

The French Quarter is mostly for tourists, or where you take out-of-town friends/family.

When I lived in NOLA many years ago, Uptown was a lot more fun. As dolphnlvr6 suggests, there is more than enough for Tulane students to do right around the university – or within a streetcar ride.

Maple Street just off of Broadway has several restaurants as well as a sports bar that are all popular with the students. All very casual. And not to be missed is the Maple Street Patisserie!
