March 10th SAT Discussion

wat was the sentence with minize? maybe i omitted that one.

haha it's funny how these threads are like logistics curves...

that one was idiosyncratic because of the eccentricity thing...

Does anyone remember if the quadrant question (the one with four as the answer) was in the last 20-minute math section or before it?

Kyzan: who is your grandpa? Did he really win a Nobel Prize? That's amazing if he did!

did ne1 else have math experimental section 6????

a few questions from it were:

for all positive numbers less than 100, how many have a factor of 9??

if you buy a shirt for p dollars, and it was 15 percent off, in terms of p, how much is the shirt at regular price??

it seems like im the only one who had this experimental, and im pretty sure it was section 6.

i just checked http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/sat/after/highlights.html

and it lists the sections the experimental might have been... is this what everyone was talking about? or is there going to be another update soon, specifically saying "this section about photography, etc., is experimental"?

thanks

mine was in this order
1. Essay
2. Reading (includes 2 long passages)
3. Writing
4. Math (includes SPR questions)
5. Reading
6. Equating (the one that doesn't count toward your score)
7. Math
8. Reading
9. Math
10. Writing

what does equating section mean??

what was the question about car garages for math was that posibly an experimental

Sweeeeet. Lolol, the equating section was the one that ended with A, B, C are on a line. Which can NOT be true then there was like AC + BC > AB and stuff like that.

This is good news because I skipped that one!

was the quadrant one on that section?

equating = experimental.

what was the answer where they gave you a long equation and asked you what b was

COme on... I need to know this...

If we are thinking of the same question, b=6.

What?! Why, I thought it equaled it 12. IS this in the experimental section?

VOCAB:

Marie Curie- minimized
Explanation: The author of the book overlooked the problems she faced. Thus, the author minimized them.

Ambulance- celerity
Explanation: Celerity is a measure of the quickness of response.

rock- relief
Explanation: I thought immediately of a “Relief Map”, a map which shows the contours of a region--the changes in elevation. Depression would not make any sense as a depression does not jut up into the sky from the level ground.

penguins & global warming- harbinger
Explanation: The declining penguin population foreshadows the coming destruction of the ice caps.

orangutan- retired
Explanation: I narrowed it down to Demonstrative and Retiring. Demonstrative seems to make more sense upon cursory examination. After all, Demonstrative looks more like an adjective. However, retiring is the correct word.

ban- moratorium
Explanation: A moratorium is a ban on a particular activity or item. Whaling is an activity.

smile- belied
Explanation: Jessica’s smile belied her true feelings--sadness. The smile concealed them.

eccentric- idiosyncratic
Explanation: Idiosyncratic is a particular way of doing something that is particular to a specific person. I believe the question concerned the painting style of a particular artist.

Trade route-Cosmopolitan City
Explanation: Provincial means of or pertaining to a rural area. Cosmo-Universal Politian-City.

The new guy did not want to venture criticism at the risk of appearing presumptuous
Explanation: The new guy did not want to appear like a know-it-all by risking his criticism of the leader.

Jazz musician working environment: Daunting
Explanation: The question said he worked under tough conditions ranging from merely daunting to downright intimidating. Congenial would make no sense because all conditions were said to be tough.

African American Actresses-Marginalized
Explanation: The black actresses, though capable actresses were marginalized in film because they were typecast in stereotypical roles. Thus, their talent was set aside, wasted, marginalized, etc.

Sensationalism in the media: lurid
Explanation: This question was something along the lines of “With so much sensational reporting in the Media, people are not even appalled by the most lurid news.”

**I must take issue with this answer. I believe that it was more likely a misapplication of known facts: A) Kwan is Asian and B) that Kwan is older than the boys and will be a big sister to them. However, the mother takes the comparison a step further and says that Kwan will be just like her American sister. This is not flattery because the mother makes no value judgment on her American daughter as to her worth as a big sister to the boys. For this reason, I marked a misapplication of known facts.

naidu it wasn't the experimental section, since I had it, and my experimental was writing.

What was grid-in question 13...the one with the 33 for an answer?

damn, is everyone agreeing that the answer is daunting, and not congenial? I thought it was congenial...

btw, i put misapplication of known facts as well evanw....I percieved it as the mother describing Kwan in a stereotypical asian way, which were not indicated by any "facts" they knew baout her

I thought it was congenial too :( THis is horrible. WHat is -3 in CR, no omits?
I know I didn't get anything else wrong on the stupid CR, because my answers agree with the CC'ers, sooo....
Great, just Great
