March 2008 Reader's Digest: Campus Safety

So, my parents unsuccessfully tried to hide the March 2008 RD from me until a later date as to not put a damper on my UF excitement.

Here's a link to their Campus Crime Ratings. UF is a miserable 234/286.
<a href="http://www.rd.com/images/content/2008/0802/College_Crime_Data_jng_cj_2ndrev.xls%5B/url%5D">http://www.rd.com/images/content/2008/0802/College_Crime_Data_jng_cj_2ndrev.xls</a></p>

They cite a 2004 murder. I was unaware of this incident, but I guess it could be poorly publicized.

They also declined to participate in the survey, so I assume RD looked through police reports to gather information.

Would a student like to provide answers [as you are aware; obviously you won't know percentages but commentary works too] to this survey?:

I'm not trying to spread fear, because in all reality the numbers are low compared to the size of the student body, but I think it may be an interesting topic to discuss.

I really don't understand where they are coming from. When you relate the numbers to overall student population, UF is very low in the crime rate. I think RD might be a little biased with the recent "tasering" incident. Florida has also never recovered from the murders of long ago. That has left a permanent scar on the University of Florida it seems.

To be honest, the police are very good with responding to things. They have started really cracking down on underage drinking and fake IDs. That was a big issue recently.

The Independent Florida Alligator: News - Study: UF's safety ranks low nationally

I found that. Quite reassuring.

Rest assured that UF is perfectly safe.

I fully agree with SSobick. UF is very safe.
