How do you know if you took the variable essay? What does it mean if you take that one? I sure hope my procters didn’t make a mistake
The essay isn’t variable (experimental). Some students taking without essay had a 5th section, a 20-minute variable/experimental section at the end that doesn’t go into the overall score.
(I didn’t take the variable section because I was doing the essay.)
ETA: I’m pretty sure no parts of the variable section count towards the score; my proctor clearly announced it as a ‘variable’ section, 20 minutes in length. (And then realized we were all doing writing instead.)
Should we anticipate that the old SAT scores (out of 1600) will still be somewhat aligned with the new one. As in above a 1400 is generally considered a cut off for some top schools and above a 1500 will still be considered very high?
Practice tests I took from the college board seemed as if they were much more generous on the amount you could get wrong and still remain above a 700.
I don’t know if this is accurate but

@ilovemypug I have seen that link before but I wonder if just multiplying the old scores by 2/3 is a sufficient comparison
I thought the reading section was easy compared to the documents in the practice SATs on Khan Academy, many of which are historical pieces about women’s rights and race/politics… I was surprised when all of the stuff on the new SAT were high school level.
But boy the math without calculator section was something else. I couldn’t finish in time and had to guess on like 5 questions. Currently praying that CB will give a generous curve. Glad to know that I wasn’t the only one struggling though. Good luck to everyone.
@buffalo11 yeah it seems weird that even if i miss like 10 on the math, I still have a change of getting a 700
@buffalo11 I doubt it - the difficulty of the questions changed a lot (I took the old SAT once), and the penalty for guessing has been removed…
@icantsleep, I took the SAT today as well as the PSAT.
how was the difficulty compared to the 4 released exams?
@ilovemypug https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/pdf/scoring-sat-practice-test-1.pdf
Yeah in the first practice test you could get 8 wrong and receive a 700. On the old sat 8 wrong would most likely put you in the 600s.
@YoLolololol about the same difficulty I think (but I only did practice tests 1 and 2)
@neilchyten For some students who did not take the essay… probably a 20-minute section… several rooms of kids at my testing center did it (some with essay accidentally did it as well)
The non-calc math section was so hard! I think I couldn’t finish a few at the end. I always get 36 on the ACT and I got perfect math on PSAT too, but for this SAT I’m not so sure Praying for a super generous curve!
Did anybody get unusual amount of D’s on the writing score?
18/44 were D’s for me and I knew it was kinda wrong, but I just couldn’t see other viable options other than D
i got a lot of C’s… and i put ‘no change’ for some of them too.
Math curve prediction? on practice tests 2 and 3 you could miss 10 and get a 700, and on practice test 4 you could miss 15 and get a 700! So this curve definitely has to be lenient.
^I omitted practice test one because I, a person who isn’t that intelligent, got an 800 on it. I think if we miss 15 we can still get a 700!! (Hopefully)
***I meant thus NOT doing very well
The curve will be normal and standardized just like usual.
