Hi. I'm an admitted student who has been playing the trumpet for ~9 years and am seriously considering joining the Spirit of Troy Marching Band. On the band's website, it says that auditions for the band are held during band camp which is the week before classes start. I was wondering if anybody who is actually in the band or knows about it could tell me how I should prepare for this audition? Do I play something I've already prepared? do I have to sightread? Scales? etc. Thanks.

oh! I would like to know too! And also how much of a time commitment it is. I wanna do it no matter what but just tryin to see if I would be able to do Socal Vocals on top of it. Alto sax here =)

You should contact the TMB to let them know you are interested in joining. I believe you will then be sent sheet music for the fight songs. As for an actual audition, unless you’re going out for drumline or silks it’s not a difficult one. Although I do believe some sections like trumpets and trombones do tryouts for parts. As long as you can play and make it through band camp you’re in. I would recommend that you be in decent shape going in as you will do a lot of running.

As for time commitment, rehearsals are Tues, Thurs, Friday 3:45 to 5:45. Saturday rehearsal starts quite early and well, gamedays are all day affairs.

It’s a great experience.

nice. im so excited!

Yeah, no sections besides the silks and the drumline have actual “tryouts”. Though that may be changing because the band is just getting ridiculously huge and we might be starting to limit numbers.

The time commitment is quite a bit, no matter which way you’re looking at it. Yes, rehearsals and gamedays, but there’s also sectionals that your section organizes on its own, plus other section activities that are required. It is definitely worth all of it though, joining the marching band here has been the best decision I’ve made.
