There are no auditions required for wind and brass players wanting to be part of the Athletic Bands. Auditions are required for prospective members of the Drumline. You should contact Mr. Jeffrey Fuchs (the director of university bands) via email (jfuchs@email.unc.edu) to indicate your interest. There is also an on-line interest form https://uncbands.org/prospective-students/interest-form/

I have met Mr. Fuchs before (I live within an hour of campus, and he does some sessions with high school bands. He’s a nice guy, by the way.) He told me that all you need to be in their marching band is to be a student at UNC.
That said, UNC’s marching band is not exactly renowned. I have seen a few other college bands from NC perform; NC State’s is fun, East Carolina’s is not that great, Appalachian’s is fantastic, Western Carolina’s is famous around here and really good, but UNC’s is decidedly average. However, their music program in general seems to be fine, and the students in the marching band seem to be having a great time.

EDIT: UNC-CH is my top pick and I plan to join their marching band if I get in, so the fact that their band isn’t that great doesn’t bother me too much.

If you want a good music school in NC, Appalachian State University is a popular choice. UNC-Greensboro is apparently very popular for graduate school as well.
