Questions for you UNC folks:
1. Is the marching band and/or pep band 'no cut'?
2. Is the campus diverse? Is it a comfortable place for middle class black students?
3. Is the feel of the school more elitist or more welcoming?
Thanks!

I don’t go there, but I flew down to check it out a few weeks ago. Definitely a diverse campus.

Don’t know.

Somewhat diverse–it’s 80% in state so it depends on your definition of “diverse.” There are people from all different socioeconomic backgrounds though. Carolina is arguably one of the most financially accessible universities of its caliber in the country. If you’re middle class, you’ll fit right in.

Very very welcoming vibe here. Carolina is full of super nice people. You don’t get a snooty or elitist vibe here at all.

Not sure, but I’ll find out!

In terms of geographical diversity, UNC is not that diverse. In terms of socio-economic diversity, I have met people who come from families with buildings on campus named after them and people that have literally gone without food before. Really really diverse in that sense. I would expect that fitting in should not be too difficult as a middle-class student, of any racial identity.

Those kids who’s family has a building named after them? Never heard it from them, but from others who knew. One of my favorite stories is talking about a professor who literally has one of the new chemistry buildings named after him on campus because of his work (and the money he made from it). I still see him on campus in the Pit with a UNC baseball cap and beat up Jansport backpack on.

Parent of OOS freshman here.

Google UNC chapel hill bands. The website is very clear and friendly. The marching band is open to ANY UNC student. You submit an interest form, and then schedule an appointment during CTOPS (freshman orientation and registration during the summer).

The campus is diverse economically. The OOS students comprise only 18% of the student body. They come from all over the US and other countries.

Very, very, very welcoming vibe, for instate and out of state students.

I am an out of state transfer!

I don’t know, but I do know our bands are awesome!

As everyone said, its 80% instate. But within that I would say their is a diverse community of in staters! Gotta love the out of state and internationals though!

Being an out of state transfer its been difficult because people are a bit clicky at my age since they made their friends freshman year. BUT everyone has been super nice, you just have to go out of your way to say hello. I’ve encountered a few grumps, but that’s normal. Not everyone is going to be extremely happy and some people are just that way. I’ve made some great friends here!

I am not sure. I know a few people in the band but have no idea (sorry)

the campus is very diverse, I have met all types of people and trust me, all economis classes fit in, including middle class blacks, don’t worry. Although it’s 80% in state, a lot of those people are originally from other places, so it’s not completely overrun by southerners (if that makes sense). There are a lot of international students as well, which is really great.

Definitely more welcoming. People like to say that UNC students are elitist. Let me explain-we are super competitive and super proud to be Tarheels, so naturally we think this is the best school ever and no one else compares. That’s it, we LOVE and ADORE UNC. We’re not elitist or “better than” in a mean, put-down sense. Everyone is welcoming, when you find out someone is a tarheel they are instantly like family (your “tarheel fam” as we call it). I am sure you will run into a few people who feel they are elitist, because this is life and you meet those kinds of people. But when you come to UNC, everyone is ready and more than happy to help one another.

I’m an international/OOS student at UNC who has lived in another state and country. So you can infer what biases I have.

Is the marching band and/or pep band ‘no cut’?
No clue.

Is the campus diverse? Is it a comfortable place for middle class black students?
Yes. Absolutely. I met plenty of friendly people who are very accepting. However you’ll notice that at UNC, slightly similar to that of high school, races kind of tend to segregate themselves. It’s not too bad you definitely see the pockets of African Americans, Asians, Caucasian, etc groups with their own “groups.” But I haven’t felt any racial discriminations, justRARELYignorance. It shouldnt deter you from coming to Carolina since this happens EVERYWHERE. Plus Carolina is about 70% Caucasian, so some groups of minority are bound to form.

Is the feel of the school more elitist or more welcoming?
Extremely welcoming. There’s no elitism here. The social economic diversity is way too big for that. But one thing I noticed about the south is that people ask “how are you?” a lot on a day basis without a genuine intention behind them. Heh but the people who you do meet and get close enough for them to actually care about your day will be amazing.

Btw if you are OOS, you’re definitely going to feel out of place for a few days to few weeks as people talk about their high schools and previous connections from governors school or something like that. But don’t worry, it wears off quick and you end up learning a lot about NC in the process. :)
