I’m really in love with Brown. The academics, the atmosphere, the people, everything about it attracts me. I am strongly considering applying Early Decision, but one thing is causing me a bit of hesitation:

The stereotype is obviously that everybody at Brown is a tree-hugging pot-smoking hippie. Of course I don’t believe that everyone is a tree-hugging hippie, but the more I read the more people say “well the one stereotype about Brown that is true is that most people smoke pot.”

I’m not against people smoking pot (I don’t think I’m better for not liking it or something like that), but I myself don’t and I don’t like being around people who are high (feel left out). I just feel like it might be unpleasant to be among the only people who don’t do it on a Friday night or on a weekday, sitting around completely lucid while all my friends/dorm mates/everyone in school are smoking.

So my real question is, I guess, straight from a student there (no answers based on stereotypes please), do tons and tons of people smoke? How often (i.e. like every day or just on weekends/at parties etc)? Is it uncomfortable for people who don’t smoke?

Although I am not in college yet, I know generally that many students experiment in college with things that they were unable to do in the past. That being said, many students try pot, some stick with it, some say it isn’t for them. I mean, it wasn’t for me, and quite honestly I hang around many friends who choose to lead a life above the influence. Just don’t be pressured to smoke if you don’t want to. You’re definitely going to meet students who smoke, and those that do not.

Smoking is less prevalent than drinking, but probably more prevalent than you’re used to. People smoke a lot more freshman year, in my experience, than in subsequent years.

You won’t feel odd not smoking or not drinking at Brown. I would say nearly everyone at Brown tries or tried pot at some point, but relatively few people are regular smokers. Definitely everyone at Brown has had a drink, and most people drink “regularly” (not necessarily every weekend, but not once or twice a year either).

Ah I see.

When do people do most of their smoking? Do you see people on the quad/in a dorm high during the week? or is it mostly a party activity?

lol, no, there aren’t a bunch of stoners high on the Main Green between classes. Use is almost entirely social.

Having gone to other colleges, I’d say Brown has no more pot than anywhere else, it’s just that our enforcement policies on drinking/pot in the dorms makes it less taboo and a bit more out in the open.

i dont recall ever running into any weed at brown, maybe once i smelled some, but i could be wrong.

It’s not like everyone goes to smoke pot once classes end.

I get the impression that it’s more prevalent (and much, much, much less enforced) than at other similar schools.

So, yeah, some nights (even weeknights) you’ll be walking down the hall and smell people smoking in their dorms, but it’s not like you’re going to have to get through legions and legions of people stoned out of their minds to get back to your dorm every night.

Really, it’s not a reason to not apply here ED, especially if you yourself said you aren’t morally abhorrent of it.

ah okay thats great news thanks guys

if there is one thing at Brown that you did not like, what would it be? Do you have any regrets at all about matriculating there?

Please use the search function and read the first page of this forum. Someone just posted the same question yesterday, and I already pointed them toward a thread from the beginning of the summer addressing that issue.

So Jason, what do you think about the open curriculum? I doubt that’s ever been asked before…

I have never seen anyone smoke weed here. However, some dude down the hall has got some potent stuff. Pheeee-yew.
