I am not for or against it, simply curious how widespread its use is on a campus of such an accomplished student body. Anyone know?

it exists. but it exists at pretty much all colleges... even those with really accomplished student bodies. it's not overwhelming- but it's there if you want it, and if you don't want it, you don't have to get yourself into a situation where it's there.

Actually, what was pointed out to me when I did my pre-frosh visit and upon attending I realized was true, is that at Duke, marijuana is surprisingly much more "taboo" than it is at other schools. I definitely know people who smoke it, but it's not as widespread as it is at a lot of other colleges. Duke's much more of an alcohol school. It is there, but it's very easy to go through your college career never coming into contact with it if you don't look for it.

really? so pretty rare usage, anyone wanna estimate a percentage of the student body that smoke at least monthly?

It’s hard to estimate how many students use it monthly. Most of the kids who smoke on a daily or weekly basis hang out in circles, and a lot of them stay in their rooms, smoking/eating/watching netflix. If you go to Duke and don’t smoke, the only people you’ll really know about are the kids in your dorm. I would estimate about 10% of the freshmen smoke regularly. Some of the fraternities are known for smoking more than others, but overall, more people drink than smoke.

Also, getting caught with marijuana at Duke is much more severe than drinking. If caught for drinking by the campus police (which they don’t usually do), nothing really happens. If caught for marijuana, depending on how much you have or how much paraphernalia you have, punishment can range from just having it taken away and getting written up to meeting with deans/writing essays/probation/etc.

I wouldn’t say that marijuana at Duke is more taboo, it’s just less popular than at some more liberal public schools.
