Mark Twain: Engineering Scholars FIG

I got a letter to apply for the Engineering Dean's Scholars Program which offers a 1,000 a year. However, to receive the scholarship you have to live in Mark Twain and participate in the Engineering Scholars FIG. I was wondering if anyone would share their experiences with the Mark Twain Residence hall?...to see if it is worth it or not.

Our D. stays in Mark Twain now and likes it. She even registered to stay in her room for the next year in case if they don’t get an apartment on extended campus… Her only issue with MT is majority will be freshmen there next year :-)

Our son stayed in Mark Twain this summer for Missour Scholars Academy. It is an older dorm, formerly a privately-owned facility that the school purchased. It has its own cafeteria on the first floor, a small swimming pool (really small, but still a pool) and suite style rooms with four residents sharing a bathroom (small, but still only used by 4 people.) It is as close as you can get to the Engineering Buildings and on the north end of campus so close to downtown shopping and restuarants.

I believe the long range dorm renovation plan calls for MT to be closed in 2011-2012 for a complete renovation to bring it up to par with other dorms.

Mark Twain is an older dorm, and you should know that it’s relatively far from central campus and the rest of the dorms (meaning about a seven minute walk, though its still on campus). For this reason Mark Twain has its own dining hall (walking to any of the others in the cold would be brutal ) and pool. But it’s not terrible and the community seems to be pretty tight knit. I would just recommend bringing a bike for the days you want to roll out of bed and head to class in 10 minutes without factoring in another 12 minutes for walking.

**Also, Mark Twain has one of the better dining halls on campus in my opinion. No one except the kids who live there really use it and my friends and I stumbled across it one day when we were sick of the other food cross campus. Its like a little secret. The smoothies and sub sandwiches are amazzzzing

I stayed there for 3 weeks one summer for Missouri Scholars Academy.

The actual rooms themselves weren’t impressive and the bathroom just downright sucks. It’s an older building but it’s not too bad compared to some other college dorms I’ve visited.

The cafeteria is good btw.

My son is going to be in Computer Engineering. He doesn’t want a FIG but would consider a learning community. Any suggestions as to which dorm or is it worth it to live a learning community? I think the dorms are Mark Twain, Discovery or Respect. Any feedback?
