Marketing/Advertising firms/agencies

Does anybody know any well-known Marketing and/or Advertising firms?

you can work in marketing for any company

http://www.saatchi.com/worldwide/index.asp Saatchi & Saatchi is one of the most well known ad firms

http://www.adweek.com/ browse around there

For advertising, I know that Arnold Worldwide is located here in Boston.

Are there any good Advertising firms around Cali (esp SoCal) I've seen San Diego's Fuelhaus., though kinda far.

There are a good amount of ad firms in So Cal. Young & Rubicam is the biggest in OC, while Saatschi has an LA office, Chiatday (shop for apple) is out in Santa Monica.

There are numerous midsize ones. One of the best is DGWB in santa ana.

If by Marketing you mean Brand Management then look at General Mills, Nestle, P&G and other consumer products companies, in some other industries marketing positions are reserved for higher-ups. Marketers see advertising as part of an overall promotional strategy.

If you mean an advertising agency then look at:

www.jwt.com
www.bbdo.com
www.ogilvy.com
www.wpp.com
www.publicis.com
www.mccann.com
www.omnicomgroup.com
www.cpbgroup.com
www.ddb.com
www.goodbysilverstein.com
www.martinagency.com

Some of those links go to holding groups that own many agencies, and some go to individual agencies. But you should get the idea.

For more information I would recommend books like these:

Or for the brand management angle look at these:

I also talked about this earlier on this forum:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?p=2438679#post2438679

qwertip thanks for the vast amount of sites! of course, can't miss Sonic one as well! thank you both

i know what's advertising, but what's brand management? Are both of them closely related? And how does public relations play a role in Advertising (because you constantly talk with other companies?)

brand management or product management has been around since the 60's and popularized by P&G. It's the system of dividing all your brands or products into almost different small businesses. They function individually and you literally manage the brand's image and marketability. It goes much deeper than that but it's been adapted by many many companies.

Donny Deutsche Marketing is good. But the name's deceiving because Deutsche is advertising, not marketing. :)

could you clarify a bit with your definition Sonic One please? :)

How is advertising management different from brand management?

I always see the MARKETING/ADVERTISING (the slash). Do both of them relate to each other in some way?

You have to think about it this way. Marketing is from the product/client side. They are the manufacturers and they own the product. Brand Managers work for the big corporate clients, like Nike, Pepsi, P&G, etc.

Account Managers and creatives work for a creative advertising agency. They are hired by clients, like nike, to develop commercials for their brands or products. Brand Managers tell advertisers that we are rolling out a new campaign for say, Gillette Fusion razor. We have decided that we will be spending X amount of dollars. We want a TV and radio media campaign. We want print ads. We want incentives. We want you to help us design the packaging.

Advertisers will take that strategy as a recommendation and start thinking about how to accomplish what the client has asked for. Many times, the ad agency will present other suggestions that they think will fit the brand (for example, they will propose that they run 2-3 commercials in a superbowl commercial slot because it's the right target audience).

Brand Management/ Marketing is the one side of the coin. Advertising is the other side. Combined they holistically create the image of a brand or product.

what would be the Goldman Sachs of all advertising agencies/firms?
what about the biggest one in orange county?

hmm... advertising has its trends. Right now Crispin Porter is hot. Ogilvy is the godfather. Saatchi is probably the behemeth.

In Orange County, It is definitely Y&R.

omg.. one of Y&R's offices is located in my city

well, crispin porter is in Miami, FL, so whatever

BBDO is always solid, Ogilvy is really international and incredibly strong, Saatchi...

for marketing, Renegade Marketing out of NYC is very hot in the area.

what are some of the well-known Brand Management firms? (I know there's Nestle and General Mills)

Also, if I want to work for Brand Management, do I choose an area related to Product Design, Promotion Marketing, or something related to it? (Because I've never seen [in the sites] "Brand Management" as an area of expertise)

there are the top firms everyone knows.

Procter & Gamble
Kraft
General Mills
Nestle

are considered the top companies I believe. ConAgra Foods is right up there. Companies like Apple and Nike also use brand management systems. If you wan't to go into brand, you get an MBA usually at a solid b-school and get an internship at one of the companies. P&G has a brand boot camp you go through.

Also, keep in mind that brand companies are usually in the mid west.

Can you get a job at one of those places with a solid degree from undergrad?

tough without an MBA. But you can definitely get a field sales job which can lead into a brand job later on. That's what I've done as an Account Manager for P&G (plus I work from home and love my team).
