My career goal is to ultimately go into high level sales, like travel around selling large amounts of a product to big clients.

Is Marketing a good major for this? I've always more thought of marketing as advertisements and commercials, etc. However, lately I've been told that Marketing is a great major for sales? Is this true?

If not Marketing, what major?

Advertising is just one part of marketing. Marketing also includes understanding supply and demand, pricing strategies, consumer preferences, and distribution channels. So I think marketing is a good major for sales. But I know very good salesmen who are majored in general business, economics, and pre-law. I also know some who never went to college. Furthermore, if you want to specialize, major in a specialty. Want a job in pharmaceuticals sales, be a nurse or a pharmacist first. Want to sell IT services, major in IT. But the really good salespeople I know have the gift of gab and seemed to have that knack coming out of the womb.

Marketing is good for sales but it also takes a certain person to do sales as well. Sales requires someone who is persuasive, determined, good work ethic, and confidence. Confidence is really crucial because if you don’t get one sale there is always another and you cannot get down or you will fail. Marketing gives you the basics of product management and account management but it cannot really teach you people skills. Check out B2B sales it seems like that is up your alley.

Yes B2B sales is actually what I’m interested in. I do think I have good talking skills and the “gift of gab”, but I was wondering what major would compliment it best.

Marketing would do well especially if your school is part of the professional sales institute like mine.
