Markley

Soooo, I know most that are looking at CC are in the application process but I thought I would throw this out there from a parent perspective on Markley. Obviously I do not live there and never will. But after reading blogs everywhere I was expecting the worst for my boy. Roaches, old building , etc. A couple days ago I moved my son into Markley and was surprised on the positive side. He has a high floor, which i think is a surely a positive as the lower levels has that grandmother 1970’s feel to it. The room is bright facing the hospital, the window opens enough to get a good breeze (with the door open, which all new students should do). The room was clean and the bathrooms old but functional and at least through day 2, clean. While I am sure there are newer dorms, I was very happy that Markley was better than my crazy A$$ head was thinking. While the cafeteria at Markley may not be the best, one of the better ones is a short walk @ Mosher-Jordan. I guess I am writing this as I think its important for everyone to temper their opinion before they actually are in a position to have one. While I am speaking of one dorm, this may pertain to a number of things. Obviously, my sons opinion may change over time, but initial impressions is positive+

I just moved my sophomore kid into one of the many newer “off campus” (a few minute walk to central campus) apartment buildings. Two of the new roommates lived in Markley last year. Boy, did I hear an earful from them about Markley. The positive is that it’s an incredibly social dorm.

Experience and time will tell. Just stating the initial impression. Might turn pear shaped quick. Might not

Your kid may be one of the last residents of Markley. The UMich hospital is eyeing the site for demolition and a new medical facility and UMich might have identified another site for new student housing down near the IM.

Considering all the other new construction taking place, or completed, I’m a little surprised that Markley has lasted this long.

I surely see the reasoning behind building a new residence hall. Markley is far from state of the art.
