Hi guys! I'm a current junior and will be going through unifieds just like many of you, or your kids, have. After reading around here it seems like a professional audition coach is the best way to go. I've found Mary Anna and MTCA's kids have gotten the most results. Can anyone offer any insight on these coaching programs? Trying to decide between the two. My family is supportive of hiring a coach, as we want me to have the best shot at getting into a BFA; knowing the competitive nature of it all. If any of you could give some more insight on the different coaching styles that would be great! Thank you so much

I don’t think you can go wrong either way. I think they both offer a free consult - maybe you should see which one you “click” with more? I think I might make the decision on whether it was easier to get to Texas, or to NYC for the Master Classes and Mock Auditions each offer. Moo does offer Moonifieds as well. Even if you plan to do the majority of your coaching via Skype - a Mock Audition or a Master class might be something you want to add to your preparation - and so travel expense to get to one or the other might be the most logical tipping factor.

The year we worked with Moo she offered master classes in NYC, Atlanta, Dallas and LA so there were location options. But @kategrizz is correct that many of her classes and Moonifieds are in Dallas. We worked with Moo mainly via Skype since we do not live near Texas. But we did travel to Dallas for Moonifieds and we did attend a master class in NYC. The vocal coach who helped with song selection and presentation that Moo connected us with lives in NYC. We also worked with him via Skype.
I agree that both MTCA and Moo are great choices and that you all should do an initial consult and see where you feel most comfortable. Both also have great websites. And Moo also has a book called I Got In which I would recommend to anyone planning to audition for college programs. All these resources may give you a feel for what each has to offer. Best of luck to you!

I would also say check into Dave Clemmons. He was amazing!!!

My D has worked with both Moo and Dave Clemmons in the past. Both are excellent. Highly recommend them. I am sure that MTCA is fine also. Everyone who uses them seems satisfied. I guess this too is about “fit”.

@addicted2mt I would completely agree! You have to be able to feel comfortable and trust the person that you are using. Otherwise, their advice and direction will not help at all.

I agree that location and fit are important. I do not know how cost compares, but that should be a consideration too. We worked with MTCA and would highly recommend them. One thing I like is that they have several different coaches so they try to find the right ones to fit your style and needs. Among others, they have several: Song Selection/Performance coaches, Vocal Tech Coaches, Monologue Coaches, and Dance Coaches. My D’s Monologue Coach was also her audition process guide. I think that is how it usually works. You can pick and choose what coaching you need, go at your own pace, and pay as you go. My D used a local Vocal Coach instead of MTCA’s to cut on cost and to make things easier. She met with the Dance Coach once to assess her skills and strengths/weaknesses, but used a local person to choreograph her pre-screen dance. She only attended one Mock Audition, went to several of their Dance classes, but didn’t go to any Master Classes. If we were to do it again, we would have probably taken advantage of more that they offer.

My d used MTCA 3 years ago, when no one I knew had ever been through this audition process, and although I found CC early, was totally ignorant of what would be necessary. We would have died without Ellen Lettrich and MTCA! Used them for everything but dance, since we are on the Northwest Coast. When you work with MTCA, you become family, and as I am now part of the ‘alumnae’ group, continue to see all current MTCA participants have the same fondness and gratitude that we experienced. My daughter and I continue to stay in touch with Ellen and coaches, and I see them whenever I travel to see my daughter in NYC. The MTCA 2014 students’ profiles and acceptances have just, as of May 1, been posted on the website, so visit there and view success stories! That being said, you should probably talk with both and see who you connect with. This is a very personal process.
