I'm trying to decide between Maryland, George Washington University, and Boston University. I was offered the full banneker key scholarship so I'm definitely looking at Maryland closely, but I've always been a city girl...I really hate suburbia and most of my top schools were in DC, Boston, and New York.

So basically I want to know, what kind of role does Washington DC play in the lives of students at UMD?

All I can say is that I went to school in Philly while he was at UMD...every weekend I visited we pent the day in DC. This was long before there was a metro stop. If you love DC, than you will be close enough to visit it often. I think that in the fall you will spend your Saturdays at UMD for football games, thus no need to go into DC until the night.

For some people, the DC Scene is very important--my friends and I love going into the District for concerts (930 club and Black Cat are two awesome small venues), restaurants (which are EVERYWHERE), and random outings (cherry blossoms, 5ks, museums--we're dorks), and other things. Chinatown and the heart of DC are only a 25 minute metro ride away, which is very convenient.

But as posted above, there's always stuff to do on campus.
