anyone know how many people in MD get distinguished scholar finalist each year? just curious.

What does finalist mean...does it mean you are a recipient, are not a recipient, or might me a recipient?

Finalist means you're guaranteed the $3000/year if you go to a Maryland school, semi-finalist means you may get it if funds allow (I got semi-finalist and received the scholarship).

How hard is it to get the banneker/key scholarship? Is it based solely on stats?

I think some scores are lower than 2200; not everyone can get that you know...

2300 sat and 3.8 uw and semifinalist…lame

Alice
If you are a semi-finalist, the chance to get $3000 is high
Have you got the letter from the program and ask you if you want to accept the scholarship yet? I believe the letter was sent out to those semi-finalist this week

I was a Semifinalist and I got the money.

i was a semifinalist and i got offered money too. they better not run out of money… or else im in trouble again.

There were approx. 350 finalists and 500 semi-finalists
Depending upon the fund, MD normally given approx. 370 scholarship (each will get $3000 annual for 4 years)

Every year, almost all the semi-finalist will get the scholarship
Not sure about this year, since the economic is bad and maybe quite a few finalists choose to stay at MD school.

hey, i know this is old but do you think i could get it with 4.0 UW and 2270 SAT? (PSAT was 219 so not NMSF)

^ since many of the TOP Maryland SAT scores leave the state, YES, you have a very good chance …

Yes I was not NMF but received the scholarship

You might get it kinda late but since a lot of top scorers do leave the state you do have a decent shot, even if you’re not at the veryyyy top.

I believe my son’s PSAT score was 210. He has a 4.0 unweighted and received Md Distinguished Scholar Semi-finalist. A friend of mine whose daughter received honorable mention several years ago (she is in her sophomore year now) was contacted this past summer offering her the $3000 starting this past fall. Apparently, some of the kids who had been receiving it either transferred or did not meet the requirements. I thought this was exciting and gives hope for all of those who are still waiting.

Does Maryland Distinguished Scholar - Honorable Mention Status have any monetary value?

I think the only $ you’ll get out of it is a waiver of the University of MD application fee:
“The University of Maryland grants fee waivers for National Merit, National Achievement, or National Hispanic finalists or semi-finalists and Maryland Distinguished Scholar finalists, semi-finalists, and honorable mention recipients.”
My understanding is that MD Distinguished Scholar finalists get the scholarships, semifinalists are “alternates” and most of them end up getting money too, but honorable mention do not.

Although you can not be certain, it is possible you could still get money. I have a friend whose daughter was Honorable Mention. About a year and a half into her college career, she received notice that she was getting $3,000/year for her remaining undergrad. years. It all depends on whether or not people who are awarded $ stay in state schools and maintain the conditions of the scholarship ie grades, abstain from the use of illegal drugs,…

I have heard that the MD Distinguished Scholar program has been cancelled due to budget cuts. I was further told that current HS seniors who received notification that they got the award in fall 2010 will not receive the scholarship.

Can anyone confirm this?

JHUmom2, where did you hear this? I searched via Google and didn’t find anything about the program being cut.

see this report: http://mlis.state.md.us/2011rs/90-Day-report/The90DayReport.pdf

“The BRFA of 2011 begins the process of phasing out the Distinguished Scholar
Program by prohibiting the award of new scholarships beginning with the upcoming
year. The program is repealed in full effective July 1, 2015.”

I also spoke with someone in the MHEC office.
