Maryland treats students right for gym and sporting events

Yup I’m totally spoiled as a Terp! Took it for granted that all schools work the same way but when touring other schools last fall, I came to appreciate one more thing about Maryland… No “extra fee” to join the gym on campus and no cost to attend sporting events! Students get admission to Epply Rec Center AND Ritchie for free. As for games? Yes, students have to “reserve” a ticket for themselves in advance (online) and the ticket is not transferable but hey, who’s complaining? The more often you attend games, the more “loyalty” points you get, so when there is a big sellout event, those that are the biggest fans are rewarded with the best chance of securing a seat. Perfectly fair. And I’m not even mentioning the potential to fill your wardrobe with a plethora of Maryland shirts they give away free at a lot of games…

When I toured Penn state earlier in the year with my d, I was shocked to learn students have to pay for game tickets, and it’s not cheap! Really? After shelling out how much in tuition? And then they also have to pay a gym membership fee if they want to work out? And Penn State isn’t the only one…?! Wow.

Forget about it. Maryland does it right.

this is amazing to know. I’m really stoked to be able to attend UMD and posts detailing the perks of it are awesome to read.

Yea, the student section is amazing as well. I went to my first game against Indiana a week ago and it was a ton of fun and I was literally courtside like 3 rows from the floor. The chants and traditions were a lot of fun and the heckling the opposing team was an electric feeling–especially when it feels like you have such an impact on the game by adding to the home court advantage. Got tix to the next 3 games as well!! For free!

@eding97 thanks for the idea… It’s been done before but can’t hurt to recreate a list of all things to love about Maryland…will start one soon
