Maryland vs. Florida

A friend of mind has been accepted to both the University of Maryland (College Park) and the University of Florida (Gainesville). He doesn't really know which one to choose. Does anybody here have any suggestions or any reason that one school is better than the other?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Both are about the same in (overall) academics. I'd pick Florida because of the weather.

Two great schools. What major is he considering?

Journalism.

I would think Maryland for Journalism, but I would choose Florida overall over Maryland because of the school spirit and weather, even if Maryland IS close to DC.

florida is the biggest school for jocks and beer drinking. it depends on your friend, but i'd tell him to go to maryland for sure

lol When your at a school with a good sports team and that is State....Id think its gonna have beer and Jocks either way. :)

i say maryland...little biased, though (i live here)

i'm biased too because i live in florida and know so many people who go to UF. besides, gainesville is pretty gross and northern florida is very...hick-esque, shall we say? not the students necessarily, but the locals.

and CH, i meant that UF is considered the biggest school in the country for jocks and beer drinking.

Maryland is quite close to Washington D.C. which would be good for a journalism major.

what's wrong with kick ass sports and alot of beer?

I'd pick UF, but then again I already did.

PLEASE DON'T COME TO MARYLAND!!! (personal bias)

how could you say that when you take a look at their admission standards and their student profile. I highly doubt that any "beer drinking jocks" even go there other than the athletic recruits

"what's wrong with kick ass sports and alot of beer?"

They're both lame

UMD has better academics that UF...

That was my instant response.

BUT -

I know UF has been getting a lot better recently. My grandparents live down there, and they say UF has a great pre-med program, but isn't so well known for journalism (people think of UMiamu more for that).

If he is going to do journalism, I highly recommend UMD - it's on my list along with Syracuse - Newhouse, Northwestern - Medill, and USC - Annenberg. I'm considering journalism as well, & UF doesn't make the cut. For political reporting especially it really doesn't get much better than Maryland's journalism school w/ its proximity to DC and the wealth of internships that offers.

I would pick UF over Maryland

UF is ranked 47th and is rising fast

Maryland is ranked 54th and is not going anywhere

If your friend was engineering or pre-med I would have steered him to Florida. But for journalism I guess it really depends on what type? If he wants to do political reporting, as someone said earlier, then Maryland. But overall, I'd choose Florida.

definitely maryland.. florida = hurricanes and old people who don't know how to vote.. maryland = nice seasonal weather, less than 2 and a half hours to the ocean if thats what your friend wants, democrats (lol), and since its better for journalism, its the obvious choice.

ajr = UMD troll

UF never gets hit by hurricanes and very few people actually move to Gainesville to retire. Also half of the voters are registered Democrats as well.
