Maryland vs NYU (GSP)

Would be interested in everyone's thoughts about the relative merits of attending NYU in the General Studies program as opposed to Maryland (OOS). I realize that NYU has more prestige but is it really worth the extra costs for the perceived difference in quality of the education?

my cousin in college now. He got into maryland(In-state) and NYU. He went to Maryland. You being OOS i don't know... They both have the same peer assessment ranking... Do you really like living right in the big city? If so i guess you can decide if you like NYU better. Maryland is in ****sville USA. The area around maryland sucks. The good thing about maryland though is that it is only a 8 miles to DC and the metro trains and buses take you right down there.

DId you get into any programs at either school?>

GSP at NYU and just regular admit at UMD- not honors, Scholar or Gemstone

One more good thing about Md: it is much cheaper than NYU for both tuition and room and board.

I'd go NYU....unless the cost difference would hurt a lot (I am not sure what it is OOS for MD vs. NYU). If you think you might want to major in mathematics, business, or journalism after 2 years I'd even consider taking out loans if you have to just because NYU is strong in those areas.

Isn't the GSP program a 2-year deal at NYU and continuing at NYU is contingent upon a certain gpa? I would not even consider it. What if after 2 years and $95,000, they say "SORRY, buddy, you did not quite make the cut?" Why not go to Maryland? It's not as if NYU has that warm fuzzy feel of a small private university. It is larger than many State Unis.

i don't think he can just transfer into stern that easily so if he is trying business i think that will be hard.

CAS transfers to Stern are EXTREMELY hard.

Cost difference is about 15k/yr. for OOS UMD -Small classes (15-25) in the GSP contrary to usual CAS situation. The 3.0 GPA is a concern but I'm led to believe that it can be maintained with normal effort- professors are on students constantly-attendance is even taken! UMD is ,of course, more of the usual campus and college experience -albeit at a huge school. I've always thought value of NYU degree>UMD but not so sure now-especially when factoring in the 60k+ difference over 4 yrs.

Whats your major or what do you plan to major in? When you applied did you apply to a specific major and not get accepted?

With the 15,000 bucks you save each year convince your parents to buy you a nice car that costs about $60,000 :D. That or you could get the best laptop, mp3 players(may i suggest the Archos 500 series-preferably the 100GB version), spending money, and diamonds...

Applied to CAS as undecided- still undecided- not a bad idea for the $ difference! LOL

GSP is ****, don't go, first, every nyu kid looks down on GSP, thats the problem w. NYU, steinheart, gsp and a few other schools are so ridiculously easy to get into, it just waters down NYU, and stern then assumes so much pride when it in fact is not "that selective" It is prob like a Norhwestern on paper, but who really knows, in comparision to other nyu schools, it looks like a harvard, when i visited my friend at nyu, every kid looked at him like he was some saint, and when he visited me at cornell, ppl were like o, nyu stern, like it wasn't a big deal

If you can handle the cost difference and would like the NYU experience, I would go to NYU. On the other hand, if you like the atmosphere at Maryland better, go there. The two schools are so different. How did you end up with the two of them as your main choices?

Nearly 100% of GSP gets into arts and science. As long as you do the work, you will get in no problem. I'd go to NYU.

GSP shows up on your transcript when you apply for good jobs.

GSP "is basically like being rejected and asked to pay 40k a year" and total costs adding to more than 50k a year.

lmfao @ the GSP bashing here

sounds like some bitter people :)
muahaha.
